All else being considered the same which is better? Homeowner lawn tractor ZTR with maybe 200 hrs to put on it every year. I know all is not going to be the same, but consider engine only ok?

Kohler for sure. I own both motors and like them both but, the kawasaki would be the first to go.

I've had 2 Grasshoppers with Kohlers, few problems. The older of the 2 broke timing belt when about 1600 hours on it, and that engine STILL runs 100 hours between oil changes without needing a drop added. The newer has about 690 hours and has had nothing done to it.

Kawasaki is another story. I've got a Kubota with a Kawa water cooled that is a good strong engine, when it runs. Constant carb problems. I NEVER had a small engine as prone to carb getting clogged up. This in spite of upgrading the fuel filter on the machine. The worst part is, the local Kubota dealer's service dept. is worthless (can I say that here?) and the one time I took machine to them I got it back with more wrong than when it went in. So I wrote to Kubota, never got a reply. Wrote Kawasaki, never got a reply.

Which do you think I will choose from now on?

Hey, Im new to this site, but a vet. to the proffesion. I had a turf tiger with a kohler , brand new, 2 engines in 1000 hours. Not good if your busy. And i take great care of my equip. I have a scag W/B with a 14hp Kaw. I replaced 1 seal ,tranny, wiring harness, 1 switch in 5 years , not to shabby,oh yeah, your asking about the motor only , just the 1 seal.

All my engines are Kaw. I don't buy anything with Kohler. I just like them. Have one Scag 36" WB now for 7 years. A Scag Turf Tiger with 22 Kaw. Liquid Cooled 2000 hours no problems. My new Tiger Cub 19hp Kaw.

Love them.

I have a 17 kawsaki on my walk behind. It burns oil bad when I first start it. Its hard to start. I had to replace 2 coils. On the good side it runs fine.

I have a 25 horse Kohler on my rider. Its never given me any problems so far. But I don't have as many hours on it as the Kawsaki yet either.

I had a 15 horse Kohler on my 48 BobCat. I beat the tar out of that machine. I worked it for all it was worth. I even pushed it way to far at times. When I sold the mower. The engine started and pured like a kitten. Didn't burn oil. Sometime a lifter took a wile to stop ticking, but that was it.
