It's called reverse assist. You have to help it reverse. I don't use it much and it really don't work all that well.

I own one of these mowers and like rvsuper said, it is reverse assist. You must pull backwards on the unit to get it to move. In my opinion, it's of little to no use. God help you if you get it trapped in a tight area nose down on a slope. Call a tow truck.

Yeah get used to it. Reverse assist is not much of an assistance. You are almost beeter off putting it in neutral and pulling back. Hydros have a true reverse.

Squeeze your grips half way thats neutral and you can stay in gear.

I have an Exmark Metro HP 36. On belt drives it is REVERSE ASSIST, which basically means DON'T EVEN BOTHER kicking the gear shifter to "R", just use the gripper to put it in NEUTRAL and then pull it back. You get real good at using any sort of slope to help you back it up. Takes some planning, but after awhile you do it without even thinking. HYDRO full power reverse is SWEET but not worth the extra $ FOR MY SITUATION.

Seems like you've never used a belt drive before?

And I dont plan on it. When I first started we looked at a belt drive. After running each , it wasnt much of a decision. Bought the hydro.

If you're tired of dragging those belt drive mowers backwards and don't want to spend 4 grand on a hydro, take a look at:

betteroutdoorproducts.com

hydrostatic instant forward/reverse... real reverse, electric start and great quality of cut for $1995.

Yep i own 2 belt drive mowers, i think its a waste to have the reverse in the tranny, not much help if any

I do very well with a belt machine that is even larger than the 36.

you simply mow from the bottom of the property toward the top and you plan your cut so that you don't get the front of mower down hill against a tree.

it is very simple.

i have a lesco 36 hydro and it blows, i would use my 36 b/d exmark over it anyday. We have hydros for all our other equpiment and its well worth it. The reverse assit helps at the end of the day if you get it into a rough place, but i honestly use it maybe once a year.
