View Full Version : Hibiscus - when and how much to prune

This is probably going to sound like a stupid question, but I've got to ask it anyway. Here in southwest Florida, hibiscus bushes grow like mad. I've got a new client who wants me to trim these things back, but I'm not sure when the best time and best way to do it is so they don't look butchered. Can anyone give me some pointers? I never liked them anyway, won't have them around my own house.....

If they are already growing leaves, I would only selectively trim them, by hand, until you get the desired shape. If they are still dormant, cut those suckers down to about 8" tall, let them get a fresh start.

hack them down to 1 inch and you wont hurt them. Can do it any time you want down here. They grow forever and you wont hurt them at all by trimming at any time.

I used to hack mine to an inch, but I found if you leave them a bit taller, maybe not 8", maybe like 4-5", they will look fuller as they are regrowing and until they reach a good height.
