What are the differences between an Exmark and a Toro???

If so, the deck is different. Toro uses their SFS decks. The fuel tanks are black...not much else.

If you are talking walkbehinds. You can buy an Exmark which is all Exmark. The have fixed and floating deck models. You can buy a Toro that is all Toro. They have their own floating deck model that has T bar steering. Or you can buy the Toro with the Exmark fixed deck, which is actually an Exmark Metro with the T Bar controls.

So to answer your question simply....it's mostly a difference in decks :)

Seen the new Toro WB's at the Indy GIE. They are now using the Exmark carrier frames. They even now offer pistol grips in place of the T-bar for those that like to work a little harder, all for the same price as the T-bar model.

The ZTR's are all the same except the decks which are stamped and welded on the Toro and welded on the Exmark. I did not look real close, but there might be some motor differences on each names model.

What's a stamped deck? I've heard that before...

It basically means the deck is formed out of a single piece of sheetmetal, unlike a fabbed deck that is a bunch of plates welded together. A stamped deck may be cut in places to relieve stress and welded for strength as well.

what are the pros and cons of both??? Thanks for clearing that up.

They usually claim that a stamped deck has a better air flow due to the forming of the deck by smooth rounded edges, curves, etc.. Keith is right about welding on the stamped decks. Usually stamped decks are a lighter gauge steel. Toro, several years ago, added a welded bull nose to the front of the deck for added strength, durability, and reduction of front deck blow out.

Welded decks usually add chambers, baffles, etc... to achieve a good air flow. This is why welded units usually weight more than a stamped deck unit.

My Toro 44 has a stamped deck that has worn down on one end from rubbing concrete curbs and walls. This would not happen as quickly on a thicker gauge steel welded deck.

Well do they make stamped decks w/ thicker gauge steel(Toro or anyone else)? Hey aren't Toros a lot cheaper than Exmarks? Whats the average price for an equivalent of the Lazer Z 60" riding hydro w/ a 27HP LC Kawisaki engine?

Vibe,

I paid $8495.00 for mine. It's just like what your above post is. This is the way to go if you want a Lazer. It has more than enough power with the 27hp and 60" cut. Either buy the 26 EFI or if you are leary of the Kohler, buy this unit.

Good luck,

John Deere has the 7 Iron deck that is pretty thick. It may be as thick or thicker than alot of fabbed decks, but it will not be as hardened. To stamp a deck requires steel of a lesser hardness. If you were to hit a 7 guage stamped deck with a sledge hammer and hit a 10 guage fabbed deck with the same, the stamped would be damaged more, even though it's thicker.

As for Toro's being cheaper, maybe some of them. But I have checked on the 26 FI in the Exmark and Toro and the Exmark is cheaper at the local dealers.

The Toro deck is totally different than the exmark...Tora has a Super Flow System, which means the cut grass doesnt travel over all 3 blades. there is a cavity in the front of the deck where the blades shoot the grass and then gets shoot out the discharge hole...this enables you to cut in tall or wet grass with your bogging down your engine because to much grass is getting traped inside the deck. better system but it seems like the clippings wouldnt be chooped up very good when they got discharged.

I have sold both Toro and eXmark for a number of years and have been in the middle of the stamped or welded conversations many times. In this part of Florida and South Alabama our most serious concerns have been sand blasting the decks and the left side wear. The current decks have been reinforced on the left side so wear is not a big problem and the wear plates and skid plates are easily replacable. We have some of eXmarks engineering drawings of their decks and can order any weldment for wear or damage repair.

The controversy over which deck is the most durable will never be resolved since the two types of decks stand up about the same under normal use. I have experienced situations where one deck could be recommended over the other due to the availability of mulch kits or grass catchers but they cut about the same. Don't expect any deck to give a high quality of cut when used improperly. Good mowing sense dictates that removing more than 1/3 of the growth is too much and the mowing frequency should be increased. Almost all of my cutabality complaints are caused by mowing tall grass, dull blades, blades with wrong lift for conditions, low engine rpm's, improper mowing height and lack of maintenance.

I am also thinking of buying a Toro, or Lazer this spring. I like the look of the Toro but am a little scared of that “super flow” deck. I mulch a lot and think the lazer’s deck may do this a little better? Does anybody own a Toro 72’’ 26 EFI, if so how do you like the super flow.
