Guys, I've thought about the advertising thing and don't know if this would be a good idea or not, but why not do a large format magnet and just slap it on the residents' door!? I do know there's the cost consideration, but I also think from a customer standpoint you don't want to throw-away a perfectly good magnet, so why not keep it regardless your lawncare situation! Most residences end up throwing away the door-hanger/paper ad anyway. I know I do, BUT if someone put a magnet on my door I would keep it for convenience even if they're trying to sell me lingerie!!!
From the magnet links posted a couple weeks ago I don't think it would be too far off budget for advertising costs. It's just a thought...

Wood doors? maybe i missed something here, but what would you do if you ran across wooden doors? good idea though, if you do use the magnets, i'd like to know how they work.

Yeah, I thought about wood doors after posting the thread... I guess it would hit-and-miss. The majority of doors around here are steel. I wonder what could be done about advertising on wood doors? Surely there would be some steel somewhere!

they probably would have steel somewhere, do most of them have storm doors? you could put them on that?

Not to burst the bubble, but storm doors are primarily made of aluminum these days. Aluminum will not hold a magnet. Try slapping them on the side of their driver side car door...hehe...just kidding...

didnt think of that. at least someone is here to correct me. lol, maybe you could just put them on the doorstep? i dont think its where you put them that will affect if they decide your company or not.

You might be surprised how long some people hold onto your fyers. So I am finding out. Good idea about the magnets that's being creative. Maybe, try direct mailing the magnets.

If the door is wood, then stick it securely to the doorknob. Do not and I repeat DO NOT open the storm door if there is one to do this! If I pulled around the corner, or in the drive, or worse yet, opened my door to find you with my door open, there's gonna be problems! I don't care if you're the Publisher's Clearinghouse guy! Just my .02.
That's the first thing that poped to my mind was that most doors are made of wood and aluminum. Go to staples and buy the magnets that you can apply your business card to. They can put them on the frig. Your name and number will be there everytime they are in the kitchen. I think a good promo idea is frisbees. Give them out everytime that you give an estimate. That would ahve a lasting impression on the person that you give them to. They not only will have your logo on them, but the person receiving them might consider you for the job cause of your thoughfulness.
Just an idea......
What about door knob hangers? I mean those things like you see in hotels that say "do not disturb".

Put em on the mailbox, most of them are metal and supposedly can only get in trouble putting stuff inside

Door Hangers, are a much better idea. You can have them made at local print shops or you can do it all yourself on your computer. Check around also, many times a local print shop can give you real color printing for less than a copy shop like Kinko's.

I worship innovation and don't believe there is such a thing as a "bad idea."
ALL ideas are good. A BAD idea is NO idea.
Don't get me wrong, most ideas should NOT be put into reality.
This idea is one that should not be put into reality.

Excellent idea !
People keep those darn magnets forever.
You should see my refrigerator, everything is held on with those magnets.

The only problem with doorhangers is those neighborhoods with garages where the people drive in and never even use their front door! Alot of those around here, seems like every new subdivision is like that. Been there done that, didn't work for s@@T

Most door magnets run around .70 a piece. Thats $350.00 for 500, we got 2000 door hangers from Nebs for under $125.00 thats alot more business potential.

I wonder what the ratio for handed and actual accounts that you got would be for fliers vs. magnets? if you could find that out, then you could figure out which one was best for the cost.

lol, sorry ill change them so they dont atract as much attention, but you sure can see which ones are my posts. lol. now all we need is the % returned from the amount of magnets that cost the same as 2000 fliers, you can get about 178 for the same cost as 2000 fliers according to landscaper3s info. I think you would get more buis. from door hangers/ fliers.

The other ones are 3.75" wide and 9" long there cost is about $7.00 more across the board. I belive they will give you a 33% discount on first orders. Call em for a catalouge or see web site hope this helps

I think that is a really good idea!I think a good start would be to use the magnet's that stick on your business cards. Then if that works good,go to a pure magnet. Also if there is a wooden door,I would have magnets in a envelope and have a sticker on the outside that says somthing like "free gift inside".And put it in there mail box.Good idea!

This may not be the perfect way, but they do sell a thin magnetic sheet material at Sams that you can run through an Inkjet printer. With this you could make business cards or even a bigger ad of some sort. I haven't used this yet, but it is an idea, good or bad, it is an idea. :)

It doesn't sound like a bad idea. I haven't tried it, but I have tried many different forms of advertising. The only things I've found to be worthwhile are yellow pages and word-of-mouth.

Good idea. Most may not have even thought about the fact that all refrigerator are made of metal and almost everyone needs more fridge magnets. What a way to put your name somewhere that people will see multiple times per day. I would say glue or staple the magnet to a door hanger. It is probably almost guaranteed that they will at least look at the flyer and they will keep the magnet. As far as cost goes you can usually recoup costs from a very low rate of customer interest.

I received a Pizza Hut direct mailer last weekend from this company: http://www.monstermagnet.com/. Their web-site is a little odd, but they do give high-level market information and have a couple of samples. This is what I had in mind, but received after posting this subject.
