ok - name that grub. It is none that I have ever seen. Although I have been checking around and the larva of a crane fly looks kinda like this. Anymore ideas?
Thanks

Sorry I can help you ID it either. The Grubs in my area don't look any thing like it.
However Ohio State could. Why don't you contact the Entomology Dept.

That's what is called a Crane Fly larvea. More than likely oyu had an infestation of the Crane flies late last summer or in the fall and those guys are the "NEW KIDS on the Block" so to speak!

Kickin sum grass,
Looked in the Bug Doc's book that he did with Dr. Harry D Niemczyk and They are Crane Flies for sure. They feed on the roots and crowns below the surface and on grass blades and stems on the surface. They will cause bare spots and or sparse turf areas which become evident from march to april. They stay underground during the day but they come out on damp warmer nights. His book does not list a control product but I would think a Pyrethroid like talstar would work fine as long as crane flies are on the label.
The adult files lay their eggs from late august to mid september.Eggs hatch in about two weeks and the larva begin feeding......This is an insect that molts and I wonder if Mach II would do the trick? I'M going to check. Dr. Shetlar would know best.

Checked out some labels and european crane fly larva is Not on Mach 2, Dylox ,Talstar F or Talstar One's Labels........But of course it's on the Sevin 10G Label.
Hope this helps.

thanks all,
I just got the email back from the bug doc. Crane fly larva for sure and Dr. Shetler says to treat with talstar. I still have not read the talstar label but I am sure it will work if "the man" says it will.
Another problem sloved!!!!!!!

Glad to hear you got a reponse from Dr Shetlar, a great guy, even though he's hard at times to get a response from, lol. Those larvea are also known as "leather Jackets", for their appearance on the outside. I know Sevin is a product listed for control, but unsure about Talstar though I'm sure it would do the job, may not be labeled for control. Good Luck!

If you have applied "grub-ex" or another insecticide to your lawn, that's why they flock to the driveway-no poison there!.
A friend of mine had that happen to him-funny!
These ugly creatures are the larvae form of the infamous June Bug.

Would they live in a OLD BIG tree stump? This stump has been decaying since I was a kid. Sycamore. Last summer the crew cut it down to ground; it had been left @ 4 ft. We found the biggest grubs/june bug whatever I have ever seen. As big as my first finger, I have fat fingers. Looked very similar. Yuk!!!
Anyone have a link to more info??
