Pre/post emgerince planting areas

Just wondering what you all use for your planting areas... rock beds, mulched areas to keep the weeds from popping up. Last year I started using Treflan from my local Lesco supplier after I got tired of doing a post-emergence control (pulling/spraying). This is good for 4-5 weeks, then I gotta go do it again. Not too bad up here in MN though, only have a 6 month growing season, at best.
