forsythias and death

i have been looking at all the great looking forsythias around here. i have seen several that are completely dead. for example, i saw a row of big forsythias, about 20' away from each other, going along the side of a property, and one was totally dead.

i thought: lots of people around here have forsythias, many of my customers do. sooner or later, someone is going to ask me why one is dead, and what can be done to prevent it in the future. i have no idea. anyone else know?

Pests? Rival competetion for nutrients? Water? Poor soil?Hard pruning?Disease? Shade from neighboring trees / houses? Lots of variables can cause that..You will just have to be able to spot the specific one(s)..

perhaps its not forsithia, could be witch's broom, just hasnt bloomed yet, they can get mixed up in a nursery and look similar.
