Part of the reason to use mulch is it breaks down into useable materials for the soil and plants. Rubber will not do that. Most of that is old tires.

The rep explained it as a product for playgrouds.
It stays where it is put, is resilient for rough landings off of slides, swings and "monkey bars".
it is supposed to last 9 years.
I will continue to use bark mulch for plantings.

Around here, it's $ 10-12.00 a cubic foot, so we will continue to use wood chips for all our play area installs...

The whole mulch thing us a fascinating issue when it comes to homeowners. Mulch has a specific purpose, but most people don't want it for that purpose because it costs to much to keep looking good year round. Rubber mulch has come on as an option for those people. Lava Rock is very similar, and IMO the best alternative to no maintenance scapes.
The mulch dyers are big because folks do not want to pay to refresh their beds twice a year IMHO.
Sooo the options are vast and more and more leading away from the purpose mulch was intended for.
