View Full Version : Installing electric brake controller?

I need to have an electric brake controller installed in an old truck. I have a quote for $186 for everything including parts and labor. Is this something that should be left to the pro's, or would it be simple enough to wire it up myself? I'm not afraid to tackle the job, but I also have never installed one before. The truck is a 1991 F-150. Any ideas?

Pretty simple to do yourself, I did my last one it took about an hour. 1 ground wire ,1 wire from battery to brake controller, 1 wire from brake controller to plug,& 1 wire to brake pedal. Now on my 97 ford 250 it was wired from the factory and you just plug it in under the dash.

I just had the Ford dealer check to see if I already had the plug under the dash from the factory, and go figure, I don't.
Looks like if I install it myself, it will all be from scratch.

with an older truck I would have it done by somebody else. Really not a big job but if you don't have a harness that plugs in under the dash is a little more work. For a 186 i'd have it done.

Well, I ended up having it installed. After looking at the material that came with the controller, I think I will do the next one myself. Thanks for the replies.
