Looking for a tandem axel.
No dealers in my area seem to have used.
Anyone have any tips on finding a used trailer?
If I have to buy new, should I go all out with a brake system?
What else should I be looking for? $2,900 seems quite steep to a cash poor solo flyer.

Budget is around $1.7$ though
Montana is a ways from TX also.

Check with state laws regarding brakes. In many states, when you go to tandem the increased weight capacity of the trailer will require brakes. If you actually use them or not, well, you know, hey....
$2900 seems quite high! You can always watch on eBay for new or used but you may have to drive a little to pick one up.
I just ordered a custom built trailer.
6.5 x 14 tandem axle
brakes on one axle
4 foot ramp gate
gas rack on the front
wrap around tongue
pressure treated deck
and the price came out to $1800 out the door with tax.

Check with State Laws????? D.O.T. says over 10,000 lbs GVWR for TRUCK & TRAILER you need to have Electric Brakes on ALL axles!(and a Breakaway Kit). That means ANY 2 axle trailer is going to be in that category! Save yourself some hassle and buy one that meets the requirements so you don't have to upgrade later!

In Dallas.. I can get a 16x7 angle iron trailer with 4 ft sides, tandem axle and front locking box, new tires and painted for $1150.00. Theres good deals out there, just gotta search for them.
actually there are two axle trailers with less than 10,000# GVWR. so, no you don't "need" too have both axles with brakes

isn't that 10,000# number with the trucks GVWR included? So if you have a 1-ton truck...even with 2,000 pound axles you could need DOT and brakes.
