echo 2000 stick edger

I have an echo stick edger model 2000 that is very hard to crank when it finally cranks it will only run for a short time with half choke; if the choke is opened or if it is given gas, it fails right away can you help.

too much air or too little fuel. compression comes into play big time with 2 strokes also.

What would you suggest I do to remedy this problem? I dont know alot about the edger and how often it was serviced. It was my grandfathers.
