View Full Version : Anyone modify their open trailer for mulch?

I have been getting a lot of mulch jobs lately and the bed of my truck is getting too small for the jobs. I am considering putting some treated wood sides on my 5 X 10. What do you guys think?

I used treated wood to build sides on my 12' X 6.5' prior to this season. I got a bigger truck and wanted to haul more mulch each trip.

I'm not sure if you have a single or dual axle, but make sure you don't go over the weight limit for the trailer. The guy I worked for prior to starting my own business bent the axle on his trailer by overloading it.

Good advice about the weight issue...Now that the issue is in my head, I may reconsider my idea.....not worth the potential headache!

I put 16" side walls on my 6x10'....I can haul 3 cubic yards no problem.

My trailer says it's gross weight is 5k...that includes it's own weight right? I was shooting for 3 yards as well.

i welded expanded steel mesh to the sides of my 6x12 it holds three yard and thats pushing it!

The mulch I get is 600-800 lbs per yard, your trailer cant weigh much over 1000 lbs, if that. Is your trailer a double axle or single?

I have a 6x12 Ez-Dumper trailer tandem axle with a 12,000 pound dump capacity. I put 8' sides om my trailer when i do lawn clean up and mulching jubs. I think its somewhere around 21 cu yards of space. Ive gone over the scale with a total weight of 21,000 pounds (truck, trailer and mulch)

The first time I had the mulch on it I did 2 yards and the suspension hardly squated at all. So I when ahead and did the 3 yards and still have plenty of clearance. The tires also looked good.

I don't do alot of mulch but this seemed to work ok.

My next Trailer will be a 6x12 double axle.
