NEED HELP BUILT 383 STROKER ENGINE FOR MY 79 3/4 TON 4X4 I CANT GET RID OF PART-THROTTLE PINGING OR RUN-ON AFTER ENGINE SHUTDOWN IT IS A 350 BORED 30OVER WITH 400 CRANK RUNNING 350 VORTEC HEADS WITH HEADERS JACBOS IGN. I RUN TIMING AT 12 WITH NO VACUM ADVANCE 93 OCTANE FUEL I HAVE HAD NO LUCK SOLVING THE PROBLEM ANY HELP OR SUGGESTIONS WOULD BE HELPFUL

Mow much do you like your stroker engine? Thought about building one for a race car but everybody I talk to says they shake apart. A friend of mine who is a mechanic had one in a race car and he slung a rod. Says he wont have another one.

ITS BEEN A GOOD STRONG ENGINE BUT I HAVE HAD NO LUCK GETTING RID OF THE PINGING I GUESS I SHOULD TRY RACING FUEL BUT I DONT KNOW BUT I HAVE BEEN IMPRESSED WITH THE PERFORMANCE OF MY 383 I HAVE ABOUT 10000 MILES ON IT BUT IF I HAD IT TO DO OVER AGAIN I WOULD GO WITH A 454

Yeah the mechanic I know had to run racing fuel all the time to keep it form pinging. Every once in a while he would mix it 50/50 with premium. I agree with you about the 454. For 4.00 gal for racing fuel i think i would go with the 454 that could run on a lower octane.

What compression ratio does the entire setup calc out to?
if a stroker is built right it should have no more problems than your dime a dozen 350... IMO the sb400 is the best bet.. why only 383? youve got half the parts to make a 406+ which is 25+ more cubic inches.. as for big blocks.. they're great but 200 or more extra lbs for a max of 50 cubic inches? no thanks.. they breathe a little better stock, then a stock small block, but stuff is sooooo cheap and readily available for sbc... I do like big blocks for 1000+ hp setups :) and also in factory big block muscle cars... but I have to say small blocks never cease to impress me.
thats my opinion..

COMPRESSION RATIO IS 10.9 THAT WHAT MACHINE SHOP SAYS I DIDNT WANT THAT MUCH BUT THATS WHAT I HAVE I DONT WANT TO RUN RACING FUEL I WOULD LIKE TO FIGURE OUT A WAY TO GET BY ON PREMIUM FUEL

Back off the timing 2 degrees, see if it stops and how much power you lost.An ERG valve would stop the part throttle pinging,I bet you dont even have an EGR manifold on it,but they are actually benefitial, most people think they rob power. It cools the combustion temps, keeping pinging in chech.A recurved Distributor that brings in the advance a little less agressively will stop the pinging, but take away a little power too.You can run a cooler T-stat,maybe a 160 in the summer, that will keep the head a little cooler, that might help.Buy a water injection kit, when set up right, they work well and keep carbon from building up in the engine. If your idle speed is to high,it will run on also.I think your compression is a tad to high, but try these things before you pull the heads and put thicker head gaskets on.
