anyone using or renting an "air spade"? Curious as to it's effectiveness and practicability.

It's very effective.
I've used one once in a class, it was used to excavate for a girdling root that was removed.
They can be messy in terms of dirt being thrown around, but very fast and cause minimal damage to roots. Much less than if you did it by hand.
Cost can be a little prohibitive, they run over $1k. If you need one a lot, it will pay for itself quickly though. I don't think anyone around here rents them, I doubt anyone at any of the rental yards even know what they are.
You can make one fairly easily, but it may not be as effective as a manufactured one.
Go to http://www.sherrillinc.com and look for item numbers 28752 (just the wand) and 28942 (kit).

I just have a question on the homemade air spade?? How is this done? I have search high and low for any info on how to make my own with the pipe and reducers, etc..? I can't find anything? You can respond directly to firstname.lastname@example.org.
