We have 4 trailers with split rear gates (ramps) and we're wanting to modify all four to have a side gate (ramp) near the front of the trailer to load/unload our wb's. Question: Have any of you modified your trailers like this and if so what was the approximate cost? Thanks for your help.

Did it myself. Pipe and rod hinge and pipe and rod closures.

50" wide (I wish I would have went wider)

Reinforced the frame with 3" channel.

Here are some pics.

50" Wide
50" High

Would have liked a 56" x 56"

I have some nice pictures of the side gate I built if I could figure out how to make them smaller so I could post the stupid things.

Make sure and reinforce the frame like he mentioned.

My buddy cut his siderail on his trailer and built a side gate like that. Now, the trailer frame flexes enough that the ramp gets in a bind sometimes. It depends on how he has the equipment loaded onto the trailer as to whether it binds up or not. He has to go back and reinforce the trailer chassis now to make it work really well.

I met with a welder on Friday that I trust and he said by the time he got through reconfiguring the frame to make it road safe - I would have more money in the trailers than if I traded these in and looked at all new trailers with the gates built in.
