I have a '97 4x2 Toyota pickup. It only has a 2.2L four cylinder engine. I'm debating getting a 6x12 trailer, but am unsure if my truck can even handle it!!

What do you all think? Do you think the little Toyota can step up to pull the big trailer?

Thanks!

I just got a 7x14 open trailer and my 89 s10 with 130,000 miles and 2.5 4 cylinder pulled it and 2000 lbs of gravel the other day. Didn't stop very well but it pulled it, i wouldnt try it too often thats why i'm looking for a full size.

Yea it can pull it (empty). You NEED to look at your owners manual or check a dealer and find out the towing capicity of your truck and see if the trailer, mowers, gas, ect., ect. will be over it (I'm guessing it will). If it is don't do it, it is unsafe, hard on the vechicle and a good avenue for litigation in case of an accident.

I have used my old 86 4x4 to tow a 16 ft dual axle loaded up. Must have weighed about 5,000 lbs. I do have trailer brakes. Would I do it all the time? No, but it worked when i needed it. Normally the truck pulls a 12 ft single with a ZTR and 48 inch with no problem.

Towing weight for my 86 is 5,000 lbs according to the manual.

I don't think that a 4 banger has that big of a tow rating.

Check the manual or maybe the door sticker/glove box for the rating. Put everything on the trailer and weigh it. If you are within spec. OK If not- than not OK.

Thanks for the response....I'll check into that tow rating.

How much do you suspect a 6x12 trailer weights, anyhow? With a ZTR, a push mower, trimmer, blower, gas, etc....I don't think it would be more than ~1500 lbs, do you?

We tow a 5x10 with our Toyota pickup 2.4 liter 4 cyl. if we are in a pinch. We are able to pull it but it does get unsteady at times and braking can be a problem. The trailer has two walk behinds on it. We usually do towing with our F-250 Ford. Much safer and easier on the vehicle.

I pull a 5 x 12 with my 97 Toyota Tacoma. It may not be ideal but I have done it for two years without incident. I would make sure that your 6 x 12 has brakes even though they are probable not required. The tow rating for the 97 Tacoma 2.4 liter 4 cyl. is 3500 lbs.

Well I think you are under estmating the weights. My ZTR weighs 1250 lbs, WB is about 750 lbs, and your trailer is over 1000 lbs empty.

I had an 02 Tacoma with the 4cyl. I used it to pull my 6X10 loaded only with a couple of dirt bikes. I ended up trading it in on a Tundra because the Tundra was really struggling. It would do it but Im not sure how long it would last.

I called the Toyota dealer, and asked him the tow rating on my pickup....he said that it's 5000 pounds! I was pretty shocked, and I think he was, too!

Wingnut, I tried calling the owner several times, and have not heard back from him. I'm afraid that he's already sold :-(

I think I'm going to stick to my original plan and get a 36" Exmark walk behind and just load it into the back of my pickup using ramps instead of using a trailer.

Thanks for the input

I have a 6x10 with a 36 48 21 and accessories. My ford ranger 2.3l 4cyl can pull it just fine. I even had an entire skid of cheap lowes block, 6 bags sand, and 2 bags concrete and it pulled it. That was over 3500 lbs. I did have to keep an eye on temps and stopping. Be careful if you have a standard trans though, your tow rating is lower than the automatic.
