does it cost to put your site on serch sites. if so how much and how???

landscaper3
12-16-2000, 11:01 PM
No cost to you but takes some time. Yahoo and other search engines have a suggest a site there is where you put your address in. If they want money you are in the wrong one just look for add a site or sugest a site on each search engine home page. There is search engines that will cost you money but Yahoo, Lycos, Infoseek and others are free. The advantages to search engines is some customer is looking in computer for lawn maintenance he or she types in lawn maintenance in maine for instance our web site comes up, so it is an effective tool.

How does the support work when you register. I want to "Buy" ..www.greenkeeperslawn.com or something like that. When I register it do I have to pay a monthly upkeep on it or is it just an initial registration fee + a yearly fee? I have a site but it is through geocities and I want my own...
thanks for the help

To get your domain name you have to visit a site that sells domain names, like domaininfo.com, register.com, networksolutions.com, etc. There are a lot of sites that sell names now, but I would recommend domaininfo.com. The price is lower than most (although Eric ELM had one that was cheaper - can't remember that one now). To buy a domain name you have to pay an annual fee, generally $20-35/year.

However, before you register your name, the most important thing to do is to determine what company will be hosting your web site, because when you register your domain name you need to "park" the name somewhere. Some domain name registering companies will charge you to park your name at their site until you find a hosting company for your site. I would highly recommend bcnsolutions as a hosting company. I use them and it only costs $5.00 per month. And their service is pretty good, although once your site is up you really don't need much service. Check them out at http://www.bcnsolutions.com

Good luck, let me know if you need more info.
My site is http://www.383turf.com (same as my phone number because my company name was already taken....hard to get a name!)

Should not have to have an under construction message on there . Most computers have Front Page Express and that will put a basic text message and some inmages up.

Brian, I tried to print a couple of your pages out so I could sit in my recliner and read them. Basically all I got was a blank page. Is there some reason for that or am I doing something wrong?

I'm trying to get ideas to put in my own web page and what better way to do that is people who are already doing it? So I'm looking at everyone's pages for ideas. Skookum, I like your under contstruction page.

Windows ME prints exact web pages by clicking on file and then print.

What operating system are you using?

BTW Windows ME is SLOWER than using Windows 98 SE.

Esp. when using a pentium 7 socket cpu.

It's a dam complete waste of money if you pay for that POS.

Sounds like low memory on your computer. Right click on "my computer", then properties, then performance, see how much free memory you have. Reboot your computer and try to print then.

As usual I have found a way to beat the "system".

If you have a static IP address(cable modem or dsl) you can run a web server from your own computer.

Now your isp does not like this for they cant sell you web space on thier server and most isp FAQ's will state this is a no no. But I say let them catch me. And what will the do?
They will not terminate your service if you are a paying customer.

One can even make a simple web page for w/o any special software. Just use front page express which is built into the MS internet explorer 5+ web browser. If you don't have MS IE 5 just go to microsoft.com and download a free copy.

Now go to http://www.analogx.com/contents/download/network/sswww.htm
and download a simple freeware web server. This thing is so easy to use even HOMER can figure it out. There are two controls on this software. One turns the thing off and on and the second loads your web page into the server.

You should get a domain name and park it at your static ip address. You can use your static IP address as a URl but that would cause some security issues.

I don't reccommend this for high volume sites but if just get a few hits a day even a 486 computer can run this software.

KirbysLawn
01-05-2001, 01:08 PM
True. But, one of my customers is a web site designer for IBM, he said the only draw back is the IP address you get is not necessarily yours. If for some reason the server was busy and an IP was needed yours would be used and if you logged back on you would be assigned another.

With a cable modem that may not be a problem, it should be an consideration though.

lawrence stone
01-05-2001, 02:09 PM
Cable modems have static IP addys. That's why it is easy for a freak (hacker) to get a fix on your machine.

You do have to lower your security on your firewall for a home based pc web server to work. But I will be placing all my business data on a spare PC the will NOT be hooked to the net so security will not be an issue with my machine that is hooked to the internet.

My new website for athletic field work is not going to be given to the general public or even submittied to any search engines.

One can even run a home based web server from a dynamic IP addy (dial up). Here is some freeware that will make that work:

http://www.myhomeip.com/

If you had your pesticide license like I told you to obtain I would be able to offer my athletic field consulting services for your consideration.

You have great tractors (3). All you need is a 60" tine rake and pull behind 60" aerator plus a electric spreader and a 15 gal 12 vt sprayer.

And don't say you can't sell this service in your area.
I could take you step by step thru the process.
