anyone carry pistols or anything of that matter (becides fists) when on the site incase someone tried stealing your equipment?

i was just thinking today what i would do if i found someone stealing my equipment. espissally around here, weve had 2 cars stolen from our driveway. also, with my luck it would be 3 big scary guys and nothing i could do about it. so i was thinking if i had a bebe gun or something i could shoot at their feet to scare em off? idk, just thinking of ways to prevent theft. i carry my sthil products in my bed of the truck so i dont advertise what i own.

Unless your trained to use a gun and when you can use deadly force (most people don't), it's not safe to carry a gun. Lock up what equipment you can and carry a cell phone. When you call the police, always try to get a tag number, color of vehicle, type of vehicle, direction of travel, etc. It's a lot safer.

so i was thinking if i had a bebe gun or something i could shoot at their feet to scare em off?

That is a HORRIBLE idea and is likely one that will get you killed. NEVER bluff with a gun or something that looks like a gun. If you aren't prepared to use one, and know when it's legal to do so, you're better off finding some other way to protect yourself.

In most states if you had a real gun and shot at their feet to scare them off you'd probably go to jail.

Maybe you should look into getting some motion sensitive alarms to attach to the equipment that's not in use. We have some at work for laptops, if it gets moved it start shrieking. That would most likely scare the thieves away.

Well i was in a gang from the age of 14 so if they wont it there gonna have to go thou me and most likely they will lose. Iv been hit with a bat, brick, chain, stabbed, shot and much more but never lost a fight so if you come after me you will lose i guarantee it.
A pick ax for weeds works well for protection

At least here, you'll get gaffled if you carry a pistola without a concealed carry permit. No problem with a shotgun behind the seat of the truck though. Serriously though most dirtbags that will try to jack your gear are chickensh*& any way usually if you see and shout at em' they'll bail like the cowards they are. OR get a body guard. LOL

RedWingsDet
06-23-2004, 12:34 AM
i was just joking around jeeze. lol. im scared of guns, i dont even go paintballing. however, i do lock all my stuff up execpt for mowers, but then again, if you think about it, if they want it, and have enough time, they can get it if they want it. but how ever, i DO carry an air horn in my pocket, so if i ever caught anyone stealing my stuff i would blow it off and hopefully scare em off.... plus, there is always cops going up and down the streets i park on, but you never know when someone gets a chance. but i atleast see 20cops a day going down residental streets while im parked at a job....

btw, what made me think about htis thread is i read someone shooting at someone inside their trailer lastnight. it was pretty funny, but pretty damn unsafe. anyway, im scared of guns anyway so the theives wouldnt have to worry about it, plus thats what fists are for (i guess), but really, tahts what locks are for!!!

very true. plus if they were a different race or something they would blame it on racism and say they wernt trying to steal, and sue you for harassment just to get some money. IMO, it would happen around here, people look for fast money anyway they can.

A DOG.

Get a dog. When your buddy has your back, things will be safe.

I am wishing I had a kennel full of Pit Bulls at my place, but when I go there to relax, I'd rather not have a symphony a barkers.....

crawdad
06-23-2004, 08:22 AM
You don't need a kennel full, just one or two.
You should have seen my neighbor's face one day, as he neared my front door, and I let Hemmaroid, my female pit, out, and said, "Check him for weapons."
He raised his hands, as the dog did a circle around him, sniffing pockets. It was pretty funny.
My male dog is a diabetic. He can get sorta cranky when his sugar is getting low.

Armed at all times. It's up to you on how much training you get. Most criminals lack proper training but will not hesitate in taking your life. No, You can not use deadly force for theft of equipment, or property. But I could defend myself if need be. I'm all for law abiding citizens being able to arm themselves. Thank god for a open concealed carry law in Virginia. Terry

I have a consealed wepons permit and yes i carry it.
I have been robbed before and it is not a good feeling.
I am more worried about beeing robbed for $ then equipment.
when im out pressure cleaning (house, decks, gas stations, ect) its not uncommon for me to carry $2k+ on me, so i feel more comfortable having a gun.
If you dont know how to use one (the right way) then PLEASE take a class at a shooting range, YOU are in more danger if you dont know how to handel one properly.

this is not for everyone, but if you carry alot of cash/check you might want to think about it.

Being a former correctional officer i am certified in weapons and chemical use. I think its unrealistic to carry a gun however it is a state law here that if you collect money and transport it to the bank that you can act as your own security guard therefore be able to carry a weapon. I chose to carry pepper spray . The pepper spray the police here use is 200 shu,s "heat units" I carry 2 million shu's. But only for one reason is Dog's. I had a rott climb his chainlink fence and come into the yard i was mowing to see me. As far as security goes I keep my stuff locked up and never have had any problems but the pepper spray is there if needed. But is mainly for the use of animal control.

I was going in kroger for some cool refreshment last saturday evening after working about 10 hours and I started to get out the cable and lock.

and then I said: "naaaa".

I figured no one would mess with an old man that looked like he had been working hard all day for a living.

In the United States you can not kill to protect property. Only to protect life . You could have been charged with attempted murder and unlawfully discharging a firearm to say the least. This is exactly why people that are untrained should not carry weapons. No matter how much you would like too you could not shoot someone if they took your whole truck. Not to smart!

You can't really stop someone from stealing by using a gun.

And, in Oregon anyway, it is illegal to point a gun at someone unless there was a legal reason. The only legal reason is justification of deadly force. And that falls down to being in emminent danger to your life or health.

If a smaller person hits you with fists, that may not be legal justification. But if 2 big people attack you, that MAY be - might.

For your education, or anyone else reading this, one of the best sources for information along these lines, is an expert by the name of Massad Ayoob.

He was a police officer with a degree in law enforcement, that now is a world expert in firearms and defence training - for civilians and police. He is an expert for court situations.

He has at least on book - IN THE GRAVEST EXTREME that helps clarify this area.

Even he carries a $20 bill when on the street, because he said there can be situations where it may even be better to bribe a criminal from violence than to use a weapon.

Mr. Ayoob has other books too. I think Seattle is his location. Almost any reputable firearms range or shop will know his name if you need to track down a book.

There are several good authors regarding that subject, but I think Mr. Ayoob has a way to present information that simplifies decision making for the reader.

He trained a woman that wrote a book for females called something like THE WOMAN, THE PLAN, THE GUN.

One important about courts and the law - never escalate violence. These folks say to decrease violence. A $20 bribe is a way to decrease violence. Pulling steel on a thief is escallation of violence - and now guess who is the criminal?

Wow, I'm amazed you guys are allowed to carry firearms!

Over here in Australia it is very illegal unless you are a crim or a gang member or someone with friends in the right places.

They disarmed the innocent/ licenced people here because of a few nutters, now unless you are a master in self defence or creative with an axe handle you are helpless against thugs, gangs etc.

If a gang, or thugs attack you here and you defend yourself and harm them you get more punishment than them!

The baddies are the victims!

If a woman is getting raped and got a knife and stabbed the attacker in the throat and killed him, she is up for murder, not self defense.

If a crim breaks into your home and falls on a kids toy for e.g, he can sue your ass off, eventhough he is intruding.

Over here the thugs/crims etc are seen as victims and the law is soft on them.

Like I said, innocent folks here have no weapons, even carrying a knife is illegal!

The funny thing is, if you have/had your weapons registered you had to give them up, if you owned illegaly owned weapons you got to keep them as the govn. could police weapons they didn't have on file.

Crims win again!

In country Australia guns, shooting etc isn't the problem it is the gangs etc in the big cities, like in America.

Oh well, just thought I'd put my bit in too! lol.

Dave, been through it mate, is a sick in the gut feeling to be dis armed for no reason, knowing that form of protection is no longer within reach, get crims can shoot you dead any day they want.

Guns aren't the problem, they can't think, load themselves and shoot someone, it is owners!

They should teach people safe use and storage, not take them away...don't we have rights??

The joke here is, now we have no guns unless you are of a shrinking group who shoot for sport which I did too, they want the country safe, crims have guns cause they have more experience I guess LOL! So....I guess knives and forks are banned too? Back to eating with our hands!

No hand tool handles, so no landscaping soon...

See how the 'soft' part of society are just screwing the hell out of a sensible society, and being against the law to defend yourself sucks!

I think...what if a few morons broke into my home, and wanted to rape my wife and daughters, legally I'm to sit a watch like a politician would, or a Australian priest LOL! (j/k)

True!

If I was lucky enough to kick their butts, I'm in trouble.
So much for protecting the family.....oh no, the kinky dooo gooders want us to watch our families get attacked, they might get off on it, but I would do what I could if it killed me to stop them, their knowing friends and their scum family hopefully before I get caught.

Ya know Dave, if someone breaks into my backyard where my German Sheppard is and he bites, they(police) immediatly kill the dog even though the person was breaking into my property...
And I get into deep s.hit too....the burglar is the victim!

I was ripped of on one of our Houston jobs several years back basically because I had no backup. It was winter and I thought I'd make a day of the 6 acre commercial job alone (trying to save money once more). I'm trimming hedges and look over my shoulder to see a guy jump out of a car, reach in the bed of the truck, flip me off, and take my 2 month old Echo 46 B/P blower. Happened in a matter of seconds. Two years ago, someone stole a Stihl 85 trimmer off a trailer in lil ole Baytown - Pop 68,000. Just a sign of the times. I make my guys lock the equip up when not in use. If someone steals something from a job- left behind or abandoned by the curb, or not secured on the trailer, and it gets stolen, the USER pays for it. No excuses. One guy has already payed for an Echo Hedger. My guys know the rules and accept them. I don't tolerate negligence. I have a concealed H/G License and will use it only if it's a last resort. I've found that a couple of Bull Rock stones in the back of your truck, trailer or nearby can sometimes help. I carry my gun on my person only when I do municipality (city) work. The remainder of the time, it sits concealed in my vehicle.

How could any one here think about using a gun of all things to protect your self, your family, and your property. It not the crimminals fault he or she is a dirtbag, it society, yours and mine. The proper thing to do when dealing with crimminals is to assume the fetal position while they pull your pants around your ankles and say bohica - bendover here it comes again. Heaven forbid we rid the world of one more dirtbag, when they could use our property to support their - choose one or more: crack habbit, pot habbit, alcoholism, meth habbit, heroin habbit, etc..... Im mean come on guys it doensnt matter that we bust our butt for what we have, we need to have more compasion. One of the times our house was robbed the nice crimminal took the time to carve the F word into our dinning room table, ah how nice of him. He then went on to stabb to death our eldery neighbor, and leave his body rotting on the basement floor. Isnt that just wonderful. Remember guys to vote for gun controll, because then only the crimminals will have guns, and the government will protect us from them, just like they protect us now.

I like the more traditional way of calling the police, telling them your location, and how someone is walking around with a weapon, and hang up. I did it once, had the cops over to where I was in 2 minutes flat. I got to see one get chased down and go face first into a sidewalk. As Wayen Campbell would say, "Excellent!"

I really like that too, but the world isnt that nice and neat. I have my own house now, but when I lived with my parents, every house we lived in, was targeted and robbed, not to mention other things like vandalism and such to our property. Just this weekend some little bastereds stole my ramp pins from my trailer and bungee cords off it, and two weeks ago my sisters convertible top was slashed, doors where unlocked so they could get in with out slashing the top, but those nice guys did it any way. The convertible was parked next to my dad house, and he happens to be a badge and gun carring cop, with 6 dogs. the biggest are 2 great danes, and 2 german shepherds, and a police cruiser parked out front. No I think the only way to deter criminals is with absolute fear, so they go for easier pickings like the gun control advocates house.

I know i use to deal with the vets in prison all of the time. that still does not change the fact that you can not kill a person to protect property. It does not matter who you are.Try telling the war stories to the jury and see how far that gets you. People do not need to be misled into thinking they can shoot someone for theft.

As mad as i would be i would not want to take someones life over a trimmer. Maybe he had children to feed and was the scum of the earth. I still would not kill him over it.

That's not 100% correct. Texas law does allow you to shoot someone who is stealing your property.

property = money = food = life. Our property is how we make a income to buy food, and keep a roof over our heads, for our selves and many of lcos have famlies to support.

j&r i was a correctional officer if you can read better then you spell you would have read it. You can act like a bad a-- all you want . Most decent humans would not kill a human being for theft. It is unlawful and morally wrong.

We have young lcos here just starting out and they dont need to think they can blow people away for petty theft.

I sure would not want you on my property commiting such an act because the customer would surly be named in the wrongful death lawsuit filed against you.

thats right lets say you planted a gun and were found not guilty in crimina court.the family of the victim could sue you in civil court and take everything you own .

Dont think so look at oj simpson!! enough said.

It is unlawful and morally wrong.

It's not unlawful everywhere and it may be morally wrong TO YOU but not to everyone. I doubt many would shed a tear over a petty thief being killed when caught in the act.

OJ isn't a very good example, he may have been sued and lost in civil court but it doesn't seem to have hurt his lifestyle any. He still spends his days on the golf course instead of working.

Must be nice to be so high and mighty to feel you can push your morals on others.

This is the problem with our society, everyone has lost the REAL sense of what is moral and instead concerns themselves with what the scum sucking lawyers think.
I think lawyers need some good old fashioned justice as well.

need I say it again - bohica :bend over hear it comes again. Cops have a great saying when it comes to the use of deadly force - better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6. A criminal choses to rob you, a criminal choses to break the law, the criminal chooses to harm your livelyhood and your life, sometimes the criminal makes the choice for you. And as for Oj, im sorry buts that just a bad example since the guy was guilty as sin - but his 12 where thick enough to let him off. As for civil court people can sue your pants off for looking at them funny in this day of age. Im still waiting for some one to get sued for stirring up dust and affecting some one "allergies".

I tell ya', just the other day, I'm mowing these couple lawns on one street, and I'm a little bit away from my truck. I look up and I see one of those soccer moms slow WAY down and cruise alongside my truck.

Well, needless to say, I jumped off my machine and ran up the street, waving my pistol. Man, it worked great! Soccer mom tore outta there in her Honda Odyssey like you wouldn't believe! Packing heat has been the greatest theft deterrent for me so far.

Or maybe she was just trying to write down my phone number?!

There is always martial arts. However it takes a lifelong committment and is great for self-control. It will teach you about making the right choices in desperate situations. and instills self confidence . Not to mention to defend yourelf or a loved one would truly be devastating to your attacker. Well, I have the lug wrench under the seat in it's proper place so it can't be considered a weapon (although I did take the thing that locks it in place off. If I am near the trailer, the machede in the toolbox would certainly make me think twice about stealing my stuff.

I keep one by my side all the time........my lil .40. Don't know that I'd use it on a thief or not, probably wouldn't. Did have a 120 pound rottie walk up in my enclosed trailer one day and wish it had been on me.......not in the cab. There are lots of reasons to carry one with you but shooting a crack head will just make you a neighbor to a 100 of them.

You Aussies...........man I feel sorry for ya'll. It's a shame that a government would remove your ablity to protect your family and lean so far to the left that criminals get a free pass. When one right is taken away others will surely follow. America needs to know these things..........I didn't until I read this thread. Just goes to show you how free freedom really is!
We need to be vigilant here in the states and never let this happen...whether you like guns or not.......it's the next freedom that might get you.........protect what we have now and don't cave in to politicians!

After a guy stuck a gun to the head of one of my employees' to rob a backpack blower, I decided to get my concealed handgun license. I just got it in the mail 3 days ago and my pistol hasn't left my side since. I carry everywhere I go (that's legal). It's just insurance. I don't ever want to have to use it, but I'll sure be glad I have it if I run into a situation where I need it.
