I think lightning got it because we have had a ton of rain and thunderstorms

Trees that I've seen hit by lightning died immediately. Leaves wilted by the next day... no color turning. Dead!
Take couple of small branches to your county extension agent.

Replace it with a Cleveland Pear, much tougher tree, same growth habits, blooms, etc.

What type of soil was it in? When you take it out, if you take it out, take a look at the roots n stuff. It's pretty surprising, Haven't seen one do that.

Fire blight doesn't kill a tree that fast. Usually it kills one or two branches at a time....

How big is the tree? How long ago was it planted?

There's a bigger bradford around here that was hit by lightning about a year ago. It's a 6" tree or so, and it's still living. It had some red leaves on it earlier than normal last year, but otherwise seems fine.

Is the cambium still green?

the tree is about 20ft ..

i noticed there is like a grey fungus on it around the trunk

I have seen this fungus on Oaks mainly

It looks like this

Grey spot and then its curly and wavy around the edges of the spot.

i have seen it on like oak branches that have sat on the ground for a while.

also i noticed that it looks as if the weedeater ( his) has literally damaged the base so bad that the bark is bulging out ward all the way around.

You probably hit on the answer. Summer stress may have tipped it over with the compromised bark. Neal

A tree dies when it is “ringed,” or girdled, i.e., cut through the cambium layer.

Wonder how much the owner figures he saved by using the weedeater himself.
