Well looks like ill be the downward pull here linky. I have a skagg 48" walker hydro, (SU@#S)I have had in the past a Skagg Turf tiger with the built in grassleafcatcher (S@#$ed)Now i have the new Cougar which is like the old turf tiger and have had problems with it also and only have about 60hrs on it, was supposed to be new and improved, yeah right. I also have a couple of toro's and Exmark's. These machines have been great. I dont usually talk bad about any manufacturer but skagg has struck out three times with me and im done. So make sure you do a demo!!!!!!
Look at all the pros and cons it will pay in the long run.
Hope some of this helps.

i Dont own a scag but have used many of there models. The walkbehinds are very solid machines built very heavy duty. The riders on the other hand i have not talked to one owner who has positive coments about them. Scags in general lack the cut quality of the toro or exmark. All In all i would go demo the toro if its between the two... they last for ever and have a great quality of cut in all mowing conditions.

I have a Scag 17h.p./ 48" Ultimate deck. This is my second Scag with no problems. Nice cut with Eric's double blade setup. I use Scag blades on the bottom and Gators on top. This works for me.

I have driven a pre-90's Scag and found that our Toro T-Bar stearing was night and day improvement over the Scag. I dont know what they offer know but the T-Bar stearing on those Toros are the simplest and easiest thing too operate and alot less fatiuge. Im sure Scag has changed over the years to compete with all brands, I do here they cut real nice and are real durable and thats 2 things we all look for in mowers!!! Its up to choice from the owners of Scag mowers here they love em.

well here is one owner who is very proud of his scag! talking about the cut quality-i think my turf tiger cuts just as good as a exmark or toro, if not better-if it does lack the cut quality then come prove it to me! i also have an exmark and the scag and exmark are excellent machines.

I have a Scag turf tiger with the liquid cool motor that I love to death. I also have a Lazer 60, and a Torro 44 Ztr. The Lazer is my machine of choice, but have no problems with the Scag.

I have a scag 14hp kohler dual hydro 36''cut.It is great. It has taken over all the small lawns. The cut on the 36 is the best I have ever seen!I also plow with a 44'' blade on it in the winter, and use a 44'' sweeper on it in the spring. It is at 550hrs and zero repairs to date.It has been one of my best equipment choices.

Maybe its just me but it seems like nobody talks about Snapper Walkbehinds. Ive had one now for 8yrs i also run scag but the snapper is by far i think the best out there. The Loop Steering with the speed control bar are the e-z-us to operate out there and ive put mine through everything and it still is awesome. They sell the tire out of them down here in Southern In Don't get me wrong scag and toro and exmark there good machines to.

I use to own a couple of Snapper's with the loop handle(48). They were belt driven and very good machines. Then I bought a couple of Exmark hydros and never looked at another belt driven mower again.

commercial cuts--given your quote above, what's your beef with skagg?

the way it works around here, when we trash a manufacturer, we tell why.

ADMIN--please correct me if I'm wrong.

respect to all....

Of the two choices---Toro.
Overall ---Exmark.

I looked at the scags, and like the heavy duty (tank) looks. But the cut and mulching capabilities didn't match the exmark. There have been several past threads on scags, use the search, and there have been several reported problems.

I would love to get a Chopper, if I ever have enough wide open mowing that I don't mind side discharge, I will really consider one.

First off ,I will say the scag is built like a tank, Second off the scag with the mulch master kit with double blades (one gator and one eliminator) it will out mulch my exmark any day of the week, trust me I have both. The cut is a high quality cut as good or better than the exmark- sure, I have heard alot of people down scag on here but are they really users and owners or is this just their opinion they made up about it. If I had to buy another it would be a scag, exmark, or I would also like to try out one of the "is" ferris mowers- one of our dealers just started carrying them,oh well, that time will come sooner or later to make that decision.

Geo, sorry it took so long to respond havent been on for a while. Lets start with the walk behind anything below 68 degrees wont start, hydro adjustments, adjust them in the morning 2hrs later out of adjustment. Turf runner shear pin type blades hit a D!@n leaf they break, putting shear pins in every couple of hours, inlet tube for breather sucks in everything but air, change breather every hour when picking up leaves, high maintenance have to grease every couple of hours, New and improved turf cougar, No power going up hills, wont stay on a hill wants to run circles,Bagger alarm never works,Throttle and choke cable seize. Clutch burnt out first 10hrs. No More I'M DONE (Exmark,Toro AAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH!!!! No Worries!!!!!!!!)

my suggestion to anyone would be to talk to an independent repair shop.talk to the guys who fix this stuff day in and day out.pick THEIR brains.then you'll REALLY know what holds up or not.
