View Full Version : New Meyer Zoysia sod and Pre-M

Client just had Meyer Zoysia installed this past week.
We normally apply preemergent here in September and in March. My understanding is both of these would be a no go on the Meyer without risking damage.
Is this correct?
The client will not want to deal with Poa Annua, crabgrass, etc. But I'm assuming we have no choice here.

What pre emerge are you going to use?
What type of account? commercial, residential, or other?
Almost all pre emerge do root prunning! So more, others less!

This is a residential acccount.
I normally use Lesco Pre-M with pendimethalin, but the options are open if something would work.

USE bensulide IF IT is label for residentail turf, , orther wise the next best choice is barricade! Remember, these two products are do the least amount of root prunning to turfgrass that is label for residential!

Why pre-m at all? Might have some poa this winter, but if you get the zoysia established well enough through this fall, and you should have time with your long growing season, I'll bet crabgrass won't be much of an issue next spring.

Just to put more information in this thread, I got this response from one of UGA's leading turf scientists:
If the sod has rooted down, and has a well-developed root system
(4 to 6 inches deep), it will be O.K. to use pendimethalin. Use only
the low rate (1.5 lbs. ai/acre). The tolerance of zoysia in this
situation will be dependent on how well established zoysia is at the
time of application. If there are "rooting down" problems, do not
use a preemergence herbicide, unless it is Ronstar. Ronstar does
not inhibit root growth.

Ronstar not label for residential lawns

My feeling is that the root system will not be that far developed by mid-September. In fact it had barely rooted as of today.
Looks like we will indeed pass on the preemergent.
