Craig,I don't have enough of my own personal data to make a call on it, but, most of my work comes from flyers. From what I read and hear others remark it's somewhere between 2-5% of total flyers put out.
Lonestar, I would like to see one of your flyers. How about e-mailing one. 12,000 flyers eh? How many have you put out in the past? How long have you been in biz and how many clients do you have now?
Thanks, Dan

Our last year return rate on flyers were 10% return of only 200 passed out. We had 2000 door hangers and should recieve a 5% to 7% return.(high end middle class to high end upper class homes, average home starts at $150,000 and go up beyond 4million that we maintain and target.)

Personally I have recived about 1% back.Look at it this way.How hard is it too put a flyer, doorhanger ect 100 mail boxes?????Not that hard really.Personally I can do about 100 houses an hour. With 1% becoming a client, that could mean a job an hour. Not too bad when you think about it.
The reason I like leaving flyers is when I need some more jobs,I just go get them!

Scape Sculptor my profile has my years in business though been in green industry over 8 years. Handed out 2,000 flyers last year and obtained 45 clients from that. Since that was our first year our name is now out there more and people have seen us in thier neighborhood so we are doing 12,000 flyers this year hitting new and old areas (mostly new)

When we first started our business we put out 300 flyers which had excellent returns. Four of our permanent accounts now were picked up through these flyers. Excellent for targeting specific areas also, give em a shot!!

Flyers work best on houses that have a for sale sign on them with a small sign on top of that saying,"SOLD". New owners rarely keep any existing service.I have a real simple one that gets great response for spring if anyone wants a copy let me know.

I know in my area you can expect about 1 call back for every 100 flyers that you pass out. If you have a good flyer things are much differint i think that we have a pretty good one and we get a good returen on them, about 20 calls for every 100 that we put out and all but three of the estamits were excepted!
I'd like to see a copy of your flyer too!
Thanks,
Matt

Door Knockers are the same thing as Door Hangers.
we just call 'em that cause it saves from lil ole ladies tying up our valuable time when the rains are falling and the grass is two feet tall.
Sunny I will send out the info from the office tomorrow morning. I have some bids to review so you should have it b4 10am.

When I was doing it flyers didn't help too much. Customers look for price not quality. So if you do a crappy job and have a good price you are in!!! Maybe start that way and raise your prices after they see you can do a good job. If you are one that mows the same way everytime you mow the lawn (ruts), show up when you feel like it and never trim or edge. Plan on handing out flyers (in different areas) forever. Word of mouth is the best flyer.

Big D...flyers have been good to us in our area...plus the people down here are not looking for price they are actually looking for quality. We have gained customers from other companies because they were not doing a good job....plus we were more expensive than they were. People down in Texas take pride in what their yard looks like.

Lone Star I wish I was delivering flyers in Texas then. I am not saying I had no luck but not the greatest. You did mention though that your customers had someone cheaper than you first. Why? Because they were cheaper than you. Then the customer found out that cheaper is not always better and called your company. Most people want something for nothing in Colorado and who knows possibly other states. I've seen other flyers on doors. They say like 10 dollars to do everything under 5,000 square feet plus get free aeration with sign up etc. It wasn't till later on in the season when I got the call that they didn't like what he was doing and so on and so on. I found if you don't put prices on your flyers it helps a lot. People have to call you to find out costs. It is a little more inconvinient for them but they want to know and its your chance to talk to them and sell your service. This is a note for you mow guys that do it for basically nothing. You are hurting the industry and your company in the long run (not directed toward anyone. The legit companies pay workers comp, liability insurance, and taxes. If you do these things and use them as selling points it will go along way. I bring a copy of my insurance to the customer and a list of references. It always worked. It shows your honesty and reliability.

Here is a flyer suggestion to all. Say the hell with door to door, go to a local trainstation and put them on all the windshield wipers there, u can go through 200 flyers real quick.
