What does the 2500 stand for on my Dodge?

What does the 2500 stand for on my dodge. I know I have a 3/4 ton truck but that's it.

2500 is the model number for a 3/4 ton. Simple as that. Nothing mysterious.

1500 is a 1/2 ton truck, 2500 is 3/4 ton and 3500 is a one ton truck. The same holds true with chevrolet. Ford uses the f-150, 250 and 350 designations, respectively.

That's what I thought. I've always thought those #'s were stupid. Is there some reasoning behind them or are they just arbitrary? How about using a decimal equivalent...

500 or 5000 = 1/2 ton
750 or 7500 = 3/4 ton
1000 or 10000 = 1 ton

Or if you want to use actual poundages,

1000 = 1/2 ton
1500 = 3/4 ton
2000 = 1 ton

It's not like the Big 3 read these messages so I'm sure nothing's gonna change, but I still felt like venting.
