R1rider,

Is that sand or soil? That may be part of the problem. Can you call the builder and ask what he did?

It has been cut. I bought the house and had to leave for 3 months and the wife didn't do anything with it. I plan on killing everything with round up and then seeding the yard with anual ryegrass for the winter and in the spring lay some cetapeed or some zoysia. Is this a good Idea or not.

It is sand. The neighbors yards don't have any weeds at all so I asked him and he said that nothing diffrent was done. I don't believe him but what can I do you know.

It is sand. The builder said that they hidroseeded it. The new houses that are built next to mine were hidroseeded in trhe back yard and they don't have any weeds at all.

It doesn't look all that great but they don't have any weeds in there yard Plus they got there front yard soded. My house was the second one to get built and after the 3rd one I think all the builders started soding the front yard on all the houses but there also bumped up the price about 2 grand more or little less. I'll poat pic's tommorow of there yard.

It sure looks like that sand needs a bit of organic matter added. Water will leach through sand very fast, and that can be disasterous for new seed. However, some weeds do very well growing on dunes without water.

So the yard was never watered during the last three months? The seedlings may simply have gotten burned out.

My wife said she did but I don't know really how much.

So what would be a good grass and what organic mater should I add. I just bought anuall ryegrass yesterday and some round up. I will probably start the killing the weeds and everything else a week before I lay down the seed in mid september.

First of all, do you have an irrigation system? If you do, it should be programmed to come on several times daily for the first week or so. If you're going to be moving hoses around, better plan on doing it religiously for quite a while.

Secondly, at least here at our local recycling center, you can buy compost. It's actually pretty good and with your sandy soil I'd sure be tempted to get a lot of it and then rototil it in before ever putting seed down, or even sod.

The rye grass will probably be fine; out here we typically have a blend of bluegrass, rye, and fescue. By the way, our recycling center rents compost spreaders, which are a bit like large drop fertilizer spreaders. They work great and can apply a fine layer of compost on top of the seed.

Oh... remembering or seeing where you've sprayed can be tough, but you can get dye for your Roundup.

Thanks for the reply Critical Care. I will find out about the compost and see how expensive it is. I don't have an irigation system, I couldn't aford right now:cry:

Here are a couple of pic's from the neighbors yard. You can see the diffrence inbetween both lawns.

You can see it here. My yard is to the left. The front of the neighbors is sodded but not the middle or back.

What type of grass is this?

It looks from your pictures that no one has good fertile soil, but rather almost all sand. When the soil is damp can you form a ball out of it in your hand, or does it fall apart?

Can't tell what your grass is, but perhaps someone from your area can identify it.

I don't know but I will check tommorow and let you know.
