I have a 1998 xtra cab, 8' bed, same motor, 106,000 miles and no problems. The only concerns I have had with this truck is the fuel pump went, common problem and the belts had to be replaced. Other than that nothing major in 3 years.

I have heard from several people -- slthopugh none of them tru authourities on the subject -- that you can expect about 175k out of that engine before an overhaul is needed.
I would figure that in when valueing the purchase

Any info on what an overhaul might cost.
I wouldn't mind putting $1500 or so into it to have a decent reliable truck.

If the truck has been taken care of you should be able to get a good many more miles out of it. My dad has had several chevys with 300,000 miles. A new 350 runs about $1000. Also I have a 1991 1500 4.3 with 201,000 miles still running strong.

My neighbor buddy (50 years old) has a '88? Chevy 1500 stepside short bed 350 engine, 5 spd stick shift 2wd he bought new and it has 348,000 original miles on it. It's still runs strong and drives real nice (i drive it occasionally to do errands for him). Never had the engine apart, never even done valve cover gaskets on it. He's the only one who drives it, his wife never does. He takes care of his vehicles and maintains them himself. Pretty amazing amount of miles to get out of a gas powered vehicle...

Havent been driving all that long but I know that a truck with 200,000 miles is screaming repair. Keep that extra 1500 dollars and the amount that you were going to pay for the '96 2500 and buy a truck with less miles on it.
