i'm just starting out. the truck i'm using right now is a chevy s-10 (4 cyl) i am gonna get a trailer soon in time for leaf season, then next year i plan on buying my first commercial mower. i just need some suggestions on what i can expect to be able to pull with this truck, i want to use this truck for a few seasons, because its paid for. the max towing weight is like 2000 lbs. any suggestions? (besides get a new truck) i'm thinking of mabee a 6x12 trailer to start out with.

6x12 is probably the most you would want.. But the trailer will weigh in around 800 pounds, so that doesn't leave you with alot of room for extra weight. One zero turn rider will weight about $1000.. Now you are maxed and you have one trailer and one mower..

I started with a 4 cylinder Ranger. I pulled a 5 x 10 with a 44 inch Toro. Pulling was not the problem. It was the stopping. You should be ok with a walkbehind and a 6 x 12 but I would buy a trailer with brakes.

damn, if thats the case.. i'll definetly just have to set my sights on a walkbehind and a smaller trailer. hopefully i can get a 36" or even a 48" that won't be too heavy. how much do the walk behinds typically weigh? i figure if i can get something between 500-700 pounds, and a smaller trailer like a 5x10 , that mabee i could get by for a few seasons.

Just checked on Lesco's website..

For a 36" walkbehind- 443lb
For a 48" walkbehind- 468lb
Those are both belt drive..

For a 48" rider- 1,320lb
For a 54" rider- 1,345lb

My 6.6x16' open trailer weighs in at 1459lb..


Those numbers should give you a good idea..

At my old job I pulled a 12 foot trailer with 3 walk-behinds with a Ford Ranger. Like KL said, its the stopping, not the pulling. And God forbids you have to stop on a wet road.

Do you need the trailer for leaves? You can fit a 36 in the bed of an S-10.

Get the WIDEST trailer you can get. I have an OPEN 8x12. I can get a 36"MetroHP; 44" Toro Ztr; 48" Lazer HP; all on it IN THAT ORDER BY TURNING THEM SIDEWAYS. If my trailer wasn't as wide as legally allowed, I wouldn't be able to do this. IF YOU GET the widest trailer, you can expand (add more equipment) as you go. When you get a bigger PU, you won't have to get a NEW TRAILER. Also, the 12' long is alot easier at manuevering in tight spaces than a 16 or 20 is! Personally, I don't understand people getting the 6.6 wide trailer! GET ELECTRIC BRAKES and that solves the stopping problem, also gets you D.O.T. compliant for when you move up to a bigger PU.
