yeah. I got a lousy back too (just got back from the bonecruncher) and I don't wear a back belt.

You're 100% right about reliable workers. Why are they hard to come by? I think I pay real decent, too.:(

I pay by the day rather then the hour, still on large job guys can milk me. I had thgought about paying only by the job next as it would put a bit more gas in there asses ya know.

Did you get to finish that pool renovation project? Was that the job that got your back? I've been in this 10 years now and fear the day I do something wrong and end up in your shoes...

Chuck,

Have you had an MRI or any diagnosis?

I stepped back from the design/build job I had last year after I tore a couple of disks. Now I'm in an engineer's office full time and the design/build part time (design only, for me).

I had an Epidural injection in January that did nothing. I switched Doctors and the new one sent me to Boston for another injection. This time I got relief (not cured). I'm going in for another on Thursday. My doc says that it will heal itself if I don't aggrevate it. That is pretty hard when that is all that connects your upper body to the lower. Even "marital obligations" aggrevates it (guess I'll never be cured).

What are you going to do for work?

I have been sending out resumes......I have management and sales experience ...No I havnet been to the doctor because I have no insurance and cash flow is low. One of the reasons I went to work for myself is that my former job paid me well yet they provided me with no health beneifits. I had put the squeeze on them for more money and bennies and they said no, So I figured I'd be better off working for myself anyways. Now it looks like Im headed back to the corporate world or a possible police job....My back is sore all the time, and has always been a problem area for me. This time was the scariest tho and rather then play and crippple myself I'd rather just bow out. Its and intenese job and I knew i couldnt do it all myself that is why I hire and pay guys to work for me. All in all its most likely for the better anyways.

Dammit Chuck! Don't do that! Now you've got me scared, hell, you're only 5 days older than I am!

I too enjoyed looking at the work you do/did. I wish you the best of luck in whatever you do.

Would you be able to ship any of your stuff? I haven't looked at your listings yet......

Good luck!

Thats good. I would think bad back mixing with bad boys could get ugly. Anyway, what kind of sales? In the industry. Seems like some of the bigger companies have salespeople running around quoting jobs, then running the job. Have you looked into that?

Sorry to hear about your back, but sounds like things are working out well for you. Out of curiosity how well does the Brickman position pay? They seem to be a really strong company that values their employees, in the past I have often thought about selling my business and getting a management position with them.

landscapingpoolguy

Well I basically negotiated my own price with them, my skills and expereince level basically allowed me to due that and they are expanding there branch where i am so they really need some solid emplyees that are looking for future advancement. All in all they seem like a very goo Co to work for, full bennies and 401k, and basically your in charge of your own crews and its your responsibilty to get the work done. Plus everyone seesm to be very light hearted and pleasant and that is what i like.

My back really got that "creamed" feeling. It was about as bad as its ever been. But I took a lot of care. I pushed myself out of bed with my arms. Even rolled over in about 20 increments.

Couldn't even put my socks on with two hands. I could only lean sideways and slide a sock on one handed. Anyhow, I took it easy, stretched and didn't lift anything heavy or anything wrong. All of a sudden, after 2 months, my back feels very good. But I'm not really lifting.

I quit bidding on large trees to avoid moving heavy wood. And I have workers lift anything over a 7 gallon pot for me. I keep raking very mimimal such as when prepping for a lawn.

My goal is to try and increase landscape design plans in years ahead. Medium size pruning is fine - I can hand saw all day.

So one trade-off has been making less money by paying workers to do a lot of what I did myself a few years ago. That's my medical care - paying workers to do hard labor.

Hope you find the right solution for your needs.
