Yes scapes is quite huge in the area. I know john, bob and david. I am currently speaking with someone who knows Tagliaferro well about putting a thrid crew out in Binghamton as Scapes is no longer in residentical lawn care.
Greenskeeper (Tony) is here in the so. tier as well as just about every other town has a company of the same name too. LOL kinda like four seasons.
I live in Lafayette and travel from Syracuse to Elmira. We cover about 200 square miles with Binghamton as home port for landscaping, and this spring we will have lawn crews in Cortland, Binghamton and Elmira.

Small world...John and Bob are both great guys. Not really surprised they got out of the residential after seeing how big they've gotten in the past 5 or so years. I worked the residential crew with one other guy and we used to pump out 80-100 properties a week including the little NYSEG substations. Been a few years since I've talked to them, but I'm heading up that way in a few weeks to take care of some other biz and I might have to stop in and see how they've grown. Do they have a substantial base still in Cortland and Ithaca? When I left they were really making a push in Ithaca.
P.S. Tell them Glen said hello if you see them and remember. Thanks.

I dont know if you were around when the construction began for the new garden center in maine or not but it is up and complete.
Gotta love those 48 or so sub stations - LOL.
They are still out there as of last spring. Thought they had the airport contract and some other HUGE corporate acconts.
I went to the carolinas to help a former employee start up his business (kinda like a foremans position). Had sun poisoning in like 3 hours -LOL. I usually have a pretty darn good tan but looked BLACK down there in a week.
I know they are DESTROYING corporate landscape proposals. They are bidding for cheaper than most of us can buy materials for. LOL
I will send them your sentiments

I had an idea that was the way they got their work...When I left it looked as though they pretty much had the market cornered. If they are still paying their employees as poorly as they did when I was there they can probably get away with it. The only thing he has going for him is a very open job market and cheaper costs of living compared to around here. Not to mention a lot of high school dropouts in that neck of the woods! ;)
P.S. It wasn't started, but from what I've seen it looks like his next taret is to put Howard's out of business if they aren't already......(worked for them too)
kutnkru
01-09-2001, 11:34 AM
Scapes didnt have to worry about that ...
a disgruntled employee started a fire in the chemical shed and burned almost half the building down.
The good thing about the drop outs is they are easily moulded to fit a companies needs. Especially in the spring Eastern Temporaries has lots to choose from.

An employee of scapes burned down their fert shed? Whoa! I may have got pissed from time to time, but never that bad!!! But growin up in that area I know of many who would! How long ago did that happen?
I hear ya on the drop outs...just wish we had that here.

The employee was not one of NS sorry .. it was an employee of Howards that set it back in the spring.

Hello Everybody:
I really think that if you check into it, Kris can actually type.
I wish I could, I'm burning the hair off my keyboard now at about 18 words a minute & can get up to 20 if I try real hard? LOL :-)
So you guys figure out how long it takes me to make my normal mile longer post?
Hey, I put my heart in it & if I could type faster, well I would be hell on this Forum!
Kris aka Kutnkru is a real asset to this Forum & I'm glad he is here!
We need more like Kris, BTW sooner or later he will be on Vacation Kicking Grass & Taking Names. What will we do then?:-)

I would like to take a moment to give a humble ty to GrassMaster for his kind words.
Yes, things have been extremely boring here in Bingo-town, so I thought I would exchange knowledge and tid-bits with the group that has gathered here.
As far as posting, yes I have come thru the ranks in a hurry. As far as the numbers are concerned the thing to remember is the most important part of this forum is content. We all have something to add to this forum, and if by everyone adding in their 2 cents worth or nickle thoughts; it has made the foundation that much stronger.
And yes, I thought the original post by vibe was the perfect spot for posting my 1000th post.
But most of all I would like to once again thank all the Administration, Moderators, Members and Chuck for allowing me some place to go.
Thank you all for making your screen my nesting ground.
Good Luck this season to everyone, and Happy Mowing!!!

KRIS IS IT STILLsnowing DOWN THERE? I SAW YOU GUYS WHERE GETTING 6to10 INCHES TODAY .THE SUN is out here in rochester ,with about 8 inches on the ground from last week . the phone started to ring last week but stopped when the white stuff started again.its ok i m recovering from knee surgery on monday .
kutnkru
03-09-2001, 11:12 AM
We have about 5-7 inches of the wet stuff on the ground now and they have predicited another 2-3 before tomorrow morning. It is supposed to hit hardest to the north and east of us.
Positive note is this is gravy money for most, and is helping to offset the lack of winter plowing. All i know is - is that the ground will be that much softer and aerations are going to fly like hell when it all melts.
Hope the knee heals well for ya.
Good Luck this season!

I hear ya Kris, and I'll be at 1900 with ya in a bit. I've been working WAAAY too much and it seems like when I do have a little bit of time to post lately the server is down! Thats my luck.
And like you said, maybe some of the LS oldtimers will take over again once the season dies down some. Its great to see a lot (thousands!) of new faces around, but I kind of miss how personal it was before.
Keep it up Kris!

NYS is a big state. Do you actually think the entire place looks like NYC?
The southern tier of NYS is much like the area I live except for they have higher taxes and lake effect snow.

Congrats Kris!
Ever heard of Watkins Glen? Pretty upstate N.Y. stuff. Was famous for auto racing. Me I like good ol Olean as I used to live there in my small kid days. Great apples up theyah. And my wife and I love the city. Esp. the driving, lots of push-n-shove. Relatives live in Cold Spring Harbor (Billy Joel country). And Grandpa used to live out on Shelter Island-nice. Lots of turf for kutin. Yes, New York is more than cement. BTW N.Y.C. has some of the best public drinking water anyone can get anywhere.
Aloha,

Yea we have lots of grass and roilling hillsides too -LOL!!! We have 6 of the last 170 antique carousels in some of our 22 parks, we have a Scenice Railroad that offers lunch/dinner for enjoying the countryside, several Apple Orchards and lotsa farms, a Botanical Garden, Space Observatory, quite a few Historical Museums, and non of them are surounded by skyscrapers -LOL!!!
Most of the bldgs in our area are under 8 stories, and when the lake effect snows hit they hit hard!

Yes I am quite familiar with the Glen. I dont frequent the races as much as I would like to, but we do try get to the Seneca Lake Region more than we would like to for the Wineries. When we go boating and the like its usually more towards Ithaca/Cayuga Lake though. My personal preference is the northern parts of Seneca however up by Geneva.
I have not had much experience with good ol' Olean except for the fact that everyone says its a quick trip until you hit bath and then the exits get farther and farther apart as you hit Alfred Hornell areas. I believe you would have been about another hour/hour-half past that -LOL!!!
I have a brother who lives down in the city. Cin has not grown to appreciate the finer qualities that the city has to offer. We are however going to be taking the girls down to go skating this x-mas season to see all the lights and spend some family time together. I ABSOLUTELY LOVE driving there. The push-n-shove amongst the sea of cabs is phenominal. I wouldnt want to do it all the time but as a change of pace its fun, and aggrevating after the second city block -LOL!!! I always found it amazing how people dont realize they could get places so much faster if they didnt rush for 30 seconds to sit 90 -LOL!!! Their drinking water is piped down to them from north of here in Delaware County.
