Can someong give me a calculation for mulch application. The area is 12000 sq. ft x 1.2 (2") then divided by 27 right? I have to be missing something because this calculation gives me 533. I know i don't need that many yards of mulch.

I see the "sticky" at the top of the page concerning mulch calculations is being used well..................

Your are incorrect. :D At 2" thick the correct calc. is:2/12 = 0.17
Thus, 12,000 x 0.17 = 2040 / 27 = 76 SQ YD.

Wouldn't that be cubic yards??? :D
Wouldn't that be cubic yards??? :D
No because at 2" thick it would be square yard coverage. OK, now you got me confused. :dizzy:

If you don't want to confuse your supplier, you need to order the mulch in cubic yards. Square yards has nothing to do with the thickness.

1 cu yd at 1" deep = 324 sq ft
1 cu yd at 2" deep = 162 sq ft
1 cu yd at 3" deep = 108 sq ft
1 cu yd at 4" deep = 81 sq ft
1 cu yd at 5" deep = 65 sq ft
Keep this chart on your desk for future reference

I agree here what turf medic is saying. I just realized I wrote SQ YD. Should be Cubic Yards. Had a brain fart. :D Thanks, LCME

Don'tcha just love it when you see the right answer like this (posted by Chuck):
1 cu yd at 1" deep = 324 sq ft
1 cu yd at 2" deep = 162 sq ft
1 cu yd at 3" deep = 108 sq ft
1 cu yd at 4" deep = 81 sq ft
1 cu yd at 5" deep = 65 sq ft
Then you see a vague, almost (but not quite) true statement like this:
a cubic yard of mulch will alomost cover 100 sq ft
It's especially nice when there's a "sticky" at the top of this forum that explains how to get the correct numbers...
You know, I have yet to give any reputation points (either good or bad), but I'm kinda thinking I might now....:)
