Lost drive unit in my Lawn Boy

I have a three-year-old self-propelled Lawn Boy that stopped propelling itself yesterday. I think it's the round gear directly under the drive spindle, but I'm not exactly sure.

When I put it in gear I can hear something grinding in the gearbox.

Has anyone else worn out this gear. If so, do I need a new gearbox or is this piece replaceable.

This mower has worked flawlessly for three years and still runs great, so it's definately worth fixing.

When the transmission gives, you need to replace BOTH the gear and the drive pinion. Grease will obscure that the pinion has a hex bolt (15/16ths?, don't remember size) cast in to help remove the nut on top of pulley. If one has worn out, there is damage on the other also.

Also check the play in the gears along the shaft. I have had to add spacers to remove slop in gear meshing, which enhances wear.

I ordered and picked up the parts today. I'll let you know how I make out. I also bought a new belt. I figure I might as well change that too while I have it all apart.
