I have a 16 hp vanguard twin that is putting out black smoke like you wouldn't believe. It has two air filters so I took one out and the other is clean, still smoking. I also leaned the carb(idle mixture) out all the way and still no fix? any suggestions? The unit only has like 500 hrs on it.

NOW, how about the spark? Check it both sides. Also the plugs. Black smoke, as in gas is not getting burned. Let us know how you make out.

You have carb. problems, I would guess, dirt, water or combination of both has gotten in to your carb. remove and clean and perhaps throw a kit in it while tore down. One quick check, make sure the choke is not stuck partialy shut. Fuel is the only thing that can make it burn black. good luck.

I have experienced this problem before and the culprit was a blown head gasket.
