Most all trade magazines in our industry and most industries are free.
Because they target such a specific business readership, the advertising is highly effective.
All you need to do is state you are in the lawn business and you can get most all of them free.
There is a previous post listing names and websites of other magazines as well.

No big secret here. They are free because they are basically advertising flyers with a few articles snuck in to keep your attention. Example: most recent Turf magazine has an article about sod, article mentions equipment by brand, lo and behold look what is advertised right under the article? Plus they sell your name to others. Misspell your name on one of the magazine subs and see what else shows up in the mailbox with the misspelled name..
Bill
Hey Nillson, what was that last babble about? It makes no sense in the context of this thread, but then again,, gotta consider the source.

Hi guys-
I am the Editor of TURF Magazine. To say that we are an ad flyer with a couple of articles thrown in is laughably inaccurate.
While the "ad flyer" type of publication has its place, that is not what we do here. Our ad-to-editorial page ratio is strictly controlled by the Post Office, and is the same as any other magazine using 2nd class postage.
The North Edition of our magazine had 17 articles in it last month. Hardly "a few articles thrown in."
As far as the "advertiser mentioned in the article, with the ad placed on the same page, that is usually done at the advertiser's request AFTER the fact. I have absolutely no idea who is advertising from month to month. When an advertiser is mentioned in an article, I will alert the ad staff, and they in turn will let the ad client know about it. It is done as a courtesy, nothing more.
BTW, selling a subscriber list is common practice in the magazine business. Nothing new here.
As to the FREE subscription -- Yes -- The subscription is free, with no strings attached. That is common practice for trade magazines in all but a few trade areas. Most magazines (including consumer magazines) do not make a profit on subscriptions. The way a magazine -- any magazine -- makes a profit is by selling advertising. this should not come as a shock to anyone.
David G. Cassidy
Editor - TURF Magazine

To:
Dave Cassidy
Editor - Turf Magazine
Mr. Cassidy, hate to ask you, but would you mind commenting, elaborating, on another post here (over 45 replies) entitled "Peein in the bushes" ? Interested in your views, whether you agree with Phil or not, on his position? He caught the "dickens" for his post, will you even chance making a statement so that we know where Turf Magazine might stand on posting an issue like that in a public forum? Are you for, against, no answer, or take a middle of the road "stance"?
A-1
Phil, stand back and try to see the forest from the trees. From what I can see you didnt "catch the dickens" from that topic directly, but your whole disparaging attitude towards the Lawnsite forums.
Noting that you are still here, in contrast to your statements about this forum, maybe there was some other motive for those comments. Apparently you didnt get the response you had hoped for. Mercifully, Ed has pulled the plug on the roundtable, you now have Time on your side.
You write, "Posting under ficticious names, they can post whereas I cannot." Does that go for having your "help" answer under your name?
I hope for Mr Phagans sake you have not given your profession a bad name. The more I read from you, Phil, the less confidence I have in the facts of all your claims to fame.
Bill

Hi Bill,
A-1 posted that question up above, looking for a response from Turf Mag. Think it's a good question, will see if Dave Cassidy is willing to stick his neck out with an honest answer.
happy that A-1 did that.
Turfquip.com pulled the roundtable out, don't know why. It was meant to be a fun satire, a creative writing thing. Like Dean Martin's Roasting series. More funny than serious, but some people just took it wrong, they didn't know we were just "kidding around" ... people didn't see through it, instead of laughing .. they got mad. They just took it wrong.
Ficticious names? Yeah, I've got help now, answering posts, in fact, I'm looking into a computer that will post, reads the question, selects from a data base of "best fit" answers, then automatically posts a response taken from a collection of "possibles". No human intervention will be needed. Just like the search feature, but automatic.
Bill Phagan? I'm glad to see him here to help everybody where he can. Can't say enough for anyone who can help out to advance the industry, bring a different point of view. I think Bill has a lot of good ideas. Everybody has some good ideas, in a way, everybody that posts here is acting as a "consultant". We should partner stuff.
If A-1 wants to post, that's under a ficticious name, I take no responsibilty for what A-1 does, A-1 is the same as anybody else here who is an "unknown" but when I post, I'll put my name on it.
Claim to fame? I don't look for "famous" just like anyone else with experience in and around the business, I help out by marketing my stuff ... just like anybody else. I must be doing something right. Nobody is perfect, but I have lots of success stories that I can point to. As far as "free" goes, if I had a dollar for every time I helped someone for "free" I'd be a millionaire. I get a lot of satisfaction knowing that as one person, I made a difference. In the meanwhile though, I manage to earn a living from what I do. If you're interested, and if the LawnSite administration would allow it, I'll post the many success stories of the companies I've helped. Many were only doing $100 or $200 thousand in sales when I met them, now some are doing millions in sales, because of me. My job as a consultant is to solve problems .. problem/solution .. problem/solution .. that's the approach. Most small contractors can't afford my help, so they buy a book, attend my seminars instead, or post questions. Consultants do a lot of charity work, it comes with the business.
Bill, posting here is a "fun thing" sometimes. A place to "hang out" as somebody put it. LawnSite is performing a badly needed service, and I hope that the site will be rewarded. Having my name here has helped me alot. From this site I sold an Organicare Franchise in New Jersey, plus 7 options more. Another one on the "burner" in New York. And inquiries from all over the country. I'm helping to take Organicare national starting in New England. So, I've made a lot of contacts from these boards. That's why I'm here. You give a little, you get a little.
I'll let A-1, answer the easy questions, and hopefully that automatic response computer will get set up too. Automatic response will save a lot of time especially with any of the "repeat questions".
Phil Nilsson

PHIL - WOW!! You must be a real people person, huh?? I'd love to smash a computer that you program to automatically read and answer questions. If you had a choice, you'd rather be a robot, huh? I agree that a computer (especially the internet) is a great time-saver in the service industry, and using this and other forums for an example, its a GREAT source of info for business, etc. But replacing a human is not my opinion of great. I agree, people should search for repeat questions before they post new (old) ones on subjects we've had elaborite discussions about in the months before, but as someone posted in another topic, We aren't all big-shots, most full time landscapers or Owner/Opperators spend most of their time talking to a blaring engine and grass all day. Besides a couple customers and dealers, etc, they pretty much have no one to talk to for the entire work day. Maybe this is fun for them, as it is for me, to be able to come home and ineract with other PEOPLE,(not computer generated replies) and their opinions on different topics. Tell A-1 I said Hi.....oh wait, thats your posting name when you don't want to offend anyone with your replies, sorry for the confusion. You seem to have great knowledge in the industry, and I won't take that away from you just because I don't agree with a lot of your opinions. Well See, after talking to my heavy equipment and dirt all day, I just relieved a lot of stress writing to you!! Hope to hear back soon!!
A-2 (hehehehe)
Guido!

Hi Guido,
This is a real person answering yours above.
Good points made. But with the simple questions thought A-1 auto response is good to save people time in responding to a post. Will get back with more explanation later but ...
for example ..
question ... "Where is an exmark dealer in my area of Charlotte" .. something like that .. A-1 auto response says where it is without somebody physically typing in the answer. Just like Jeeves ... but customized for the green industry. Saves time right?
There's room for human input and there always will be, but for simple questions repeatedly answered over and over, it will help ... I think it's a million dollar idea.
Phil Nilsson
