door hangers have been a great response for us. We have passed them out just prior to aerating in both the spring and fall, and have gotten a good response of between 3 and 5%. Spring has been a bit better for us to pick up yearly customers, and fall is typically better for odd jobs, and clean ups.
people have commented on the quality of the door hanger, so go that extra mile if you can to make your's stand out.
Gopher (sponsor at top of page) offers a lot of nice templates you can use, and lots of other members have posted their designs you can maybe get some ideas from.

The search button brought up 52 threads with "Door Hangers" in the title.
Should be able to find some helpful info in one of them.

Just click on the link in my last post. You'll find plenty of stuff in there that should answer most of your questions.
You can even narrow the search down to include info about referrals.

Yard Works,

Sending out door hangers is the most cost effective way to advertise. It's generally the cheapest way to advertise, but can be very time consuming. Also, the time of year would effect the results. The average response rate on door hangers is around 1% - 2%. Send out as many as you possibly can. The best thing to do is to send a door hanger to each person at least 3 times per month. Offer discounts (like 5th mowing free, or 50% off 5th mowing, etc) if you sign up early. Once they become a customer, offer them 10% off each regular customer they refer to you. Start in late February sending out your door hangers. Make the door hangers simple. Your company name, phone number, and discounts that are being offered. Give them a reason to call you and not your competition.
