JD bought out Great Dane. Did they buy Scag too?
At the rate these companies are buying each other out, they'll only be one left at the end of the year.

Where did you read this? Can you post a link to it if it is online? This is the first I have heard of this.

John Deere did not buy Scag mowers. John Deere bought out Scag's (Dane Scag that is) latest venture, Great Dane mowers for 23 million dollars. The confusion may be a result of the tendacy for some people to call Scag mowers "Scags". An article in Lawn & Landscape said "By acquiring Scag's $23 million mower company...".

Dane Scag hasnt been involved in Scag mowers for years. Well, since 96 when he started Dane Co.
Around here co's buy a fleet of Scags then replace them with something else after the decks crack and the lousy local scag dealer service turns em off.
If history is a good guide then Dane Scag will start new a mower company shortly.

Bill has it right, they bought out Dane Co. which is owned by Dane Scag. And he will probably have another company started within a year....

I talked to a Great Dane rep at the Mid-Am show in Chicago last week. According to him, Great Dane will continue to operate as a separate company. Dane Scag is still on staff with Great Dane. Dane Scag is 82 years old and I don't really see him starting another company.

So i can't read very well my bad!
I met Dane Scag at a local lawn show last year. Are you sure he's 82? Gee if he starts another company ,I wonder what he'll call it? Whats his middle name?

Bob:
I hope it's not REEL, :) because we don't want any more push REEL Mowers. He might start building them though, with the polution regulations the Govt. is working on.

Maybe Mr. Scag will take a cue from Lee Iococca and get into web based used equipment brokering.
I know a web site that would love to have a directing partner with his industry experience, contacts, and unique insights.

What is this deck cracking on scags - My tiger is built like a tank - I don't think you could crack the deck no matter how hard you try. All it takes is one person to have a bad experience with something and then everbody hammers it in the ground after that. I like my scag - I would buy another - I would like to buy another Exmark too - I guess I will flip a quarter for the next purchase.

Pre-98 machines with FMD decks didnt have any support ribs so the decks would crack near the spindles and give uneven cut. My understanding is they made a running change sometime in 98 to add gussetting, which BTW the Exmark FMD decks always had.
It wasnt an isolated incidednt, many contractors experienced the same problem.

Talked to the local JD dealer last week and he knew nothing about the deal with Great Dane. He knew that Deere was going to have to do something if they wanted to stay in the mid mount ZTR market with the buyout of Kees by Husquvarna. They have sold a few of the ZTR mowers here but he doesn't really push anything, tractors or mowers, not sure how he is staying in business.
I read in the latest issue of L & L that Deere was after the Super Surfer mower that Great Dane has.

John Deere did buy oyt Great Dane on Dec. 18 2000. That info is posted on the JD web site.
Have a friend that is mechanic for the local deere co and he has 66 pages of "updates to do to their "Z""
If they had sold one. They dont think they will be handling the danes as they will be seperate company. He did say they cpuld get parts later though.
Unfortinatly he said he is going to be forced to buy a JD Zero, cause he now handles choppers and wants a piece of crap to compair them to.
