Carbon Monoxide smell

I've got a used Redmax I bought from a buddy at a steal and it works just fine, however, I'm noticing a pretty strong smell (I think carbon monoxide fumes) when using it. Not always but at times. I do wear one of those cheap masks when I blow leaves with it, but I'm wondering if a new muffler for it will help out some? I don't notice it smoking ever when I use it, but wondering how unhealthy this is to me. It can't be a very good thing.

CO is a colorless, odorless gas. What you are probably smelling is the unburned hydrocarbons (oil and gas) that is typically found with 2 cycle equipment.
