View Full Version : Northern Virginia Lunchtime
Mark McC

Dear fellow northern Virginia LCOs,
What say we get together for lunch sometime? Hoolie, I know you're on board, but there are others on this board from our neck of the woods.
We can talk about the Redskins, about business...shoot, we can even talk about lawyers.
Anyone game? Let's shoot for Saturday, January 8.
Who's on board?
HOOLIE

Jan 8 sounds good...I was gonna suggest sometime after New Year's, when I've got a clean slate. Hopefully there will be something good with the Skins to talk about...

Hoolie, I should probably tell you that I'm a Dallas fan. It's not that I dislike the Redskins...it's a great franchise and they've been super opponents for Dallas. I just like Dallas more than I like Washington. Gibbs, especially, is top shelf.
So, if you promise not to say anything nasty about FSU, we'll be ooootay!
Anyone else wanna join in? C'mon, you guys. Sign up!

Yeah that sounds good. As far as I know I can be there and look forward to it.

I'm just 20 miles west of fredericksburg, in fact half way between fredericksburg and culpeper! Of course, that's if you will include me!

This is my first year in the business, so I'm certainly NOT buying. But yes, Tim, we do allow those from your part of the state to join in. We're...dare I say it...multigeographic!
How PC of us, eh? This is cool, though. I'm looking forward to this!

Hey Marc there is another guy down in the Culpeper area also. I have not seen him on the site lately though, I will try to remember who it is or find out by searching some older threads.
P.S. since this is my first year also I damn sure am not able to buy for anyone but myself either. LOL and am looking forward to this also

Let him know, Justin. The more the merrier, as the saying goes.
I'm going to try to find a search function for members by geography. Maybe that'll score some hits. I have no idea how many operators on this board are in the northern half of Virginia, but we'll try and find out.

Sounds like we have five so far. We have to start thinking about location...part of the state, that is. Most major interstate stop-offs have a Cracker Barrel or something of that nature.
Justin and Tim, you're both near Culpepper, which isn't far from I-95, right?
Hoolie, you're in Reston? John, I'm not sure where Madison is. Near Charlottesville?

I haven't been to the Air & Space Museum yet, even though it's only 10 minutes away. Kinda like my cousin, he's lived in Brooklyn his entire life, never been to the Statue of Liberty...
The ol' high school looks exactly the same as it did in the 80's, and the 70's, I imagine. Although there are now houses built up all around it now. Have you been in the area at all recently?

Hey Justin,
Yeah, it got pretty bad yesterday afternoon. I was blowing away in a light rain until around 2:00 and it just got to the point of absurdity, so I packed it in.
Offhand, I'm not sure if this is wetter than normal for this part of the state. I don't mind a lot of water, but a daily drizzle just kills business. It's better if the 1.5" a week comes all in one day, but if wishes were horses, right?

I have recentyly stumbled across this no va thread which is a great feature on this sweet lawn site forum. I was wondering if you fellow nova people could keep an eye out for a stolen 16 hp giant vac, brand new. It was stolen from the fairfax area a little more then a month ago. I can give the serial # if you know of anyone that recently got one. I just want to get my equipment back.

Ok, here are the specs for my vac
2004 model 16 hp giant vac
Serial # 41155580
The top discharge shute was modified with 2 more mounting brackets to allow any 90 degree positioning of it, all other models ive seen have only 2 tabs
I can give a $300 reward for anyone who can locate it and give me information so i can have the police take over from there.
It was stolen from the burke VA area a little more then a month ago. If the theifs are smart, its not directly around burke/fairfax, so thats why im asking a favor from fellow va/md contractors.
Thanks all for keeping an eye out.

Hoolie, as an FSU fan, I can relate. Every year, we play the Hurricanes and they've kicked our butts more often than not. It's too bad that the NFC East is so pathetic this year, but the Dallas jinx will not hang over the Redskins forever. I can't gloat about it here at home, either. My wife is a Redskins fan, and if I favor domestic tranquility...well, you get the picture.
Was anyone here let down when Pittsburgh body-slammed Baltimore? I wasn't. Any time the crooked Lewis twins (Ray and Jamal) lose a game, I'm pretty much okay with it.

Well, it came off pretty much as planned. Five of us landed at El Agave in Warrenton and had no beer with lunch, but a lot of good shop talk passed as three hours flew by. I drank water while two iced teas and two diet cokes went down the pipes of our other four comrades.
In no particular order, Hoolie (Andy), HockeyGoalie (Trevor), GillaGorilla (Justin), Tim (Timturf) and I jointly burned (don't take that the wrong way if you weren't there) a waitress's afternoon as we chomped on chimichangas and hammered out issues such as marketing, windshield time (one of my fave subjects), mulch, turf reconditioning and even a little time on equipment.
TreeDoc wasn't able to make it due to earlier commitments, and Rob Brown of Pearland, TX, couldn't see springing for the airfare. Rob went to Herndon High School, although a year or two before Andy attended. Mattlifter, whose actual name I don't know, was one of a couple of guys who couldn't make it this month, but we're looking at a February date for a second lunch. Another was Chip of PrecisionOutdoor, and John, aka LX665 also was absent.
By the way, Trevor's teeth don't look like those of a hockey goalie. Is his claim suspect? Only John can testify for certain, but Trev claims John's not sure who he is. With the strike and all, maybe the NHL owners will contact these guys and make scrubs of 'em.
I spent a lot of time carping about a couple of John Deere dealers in NoVA, and Andy noted that one of them, the one located in Sterling (we don't name names in this column), has had a lot of turnover in personnel the past year or so. An outfit located in the city of Fairfax, Brandell's, got good reviews from several.
One of the ideas that came up that has some potential is an equipment swap. Might be tough to match actual cash values for any two items, but who knows? If the NBA and NFL owners can do those three-way trades, maybe we can, too. One thing is certain: Tim needs a serious trimmer and I need Justin to trade his truck for mine dead even. Honest, Justin, it's not as beat up as it looks.
Speaking of my truck, one of the really encouraging parts of the whole event was that nobody who saw my truck made any wisecracks about the paint job. I'll post a picture sometime, but to describe it in words is a bit difficult. Think of a parking lot surface with cancer, though, and you get the general idea. I've left it that way to test the theory that people love their LCO to have the best equipment, but don't want them making so much as to be able to afford a new set of wheels. That's believable, right?
One thing we didn't go over is the effects of constant exposure to the sun. This and other health issues might make for good discussion at some point. After all, we gotta live long enough to spend the money we're working so hard to make.
I had a great time and look forward to the February get-together. Meantime, you who did not make it should think about X-ing out the date on your calendar when we set it. There's nothing like face-to-face time to make your membership in this community much more real.

01-09-2005, 10:50 AM
Andy, I had a pretty hefty breakfast of oatmeal at around 10:00 and didn't figure I'd be hungry enough to eat any lunch. Good thing those chimichangas weren't big at all.
Trev, thank God for debit cards, eh? I got my $12 worth out of the meeting AND I took a receipt home with me. The other three will have to file a written receipt and contact us if the IRS finds those receipts in an audit.
God help anyone who has to go through an audit, eh?. I never have, but it strikes me as being similar to having brain surgery done: interesting in a clinical sort of way, but when you're the patient/auditee, there's nothing remotely clinical about it.
Any proposed dates for February?

Just an update, John and I won our first game this season 5-2 against my old team. I was traded to Johns team for a box of pucks. I showed them. Having John on my team makes a big difference. He spent half of last season knocking me down and laying on top of me while his team would score.
On another note John does landscaping and pesticide as well. If you guys want to sub out some of those jobs, he has a nice rig.

A box of pucks? Well, at least you got a heckuva teammate out of the deal. Sounds like your hockey league is almost as well financed as NHL...which aint financed for diddly right now, one assumes.

Mark- There's a Lesco on Willard Rd in Chantilly. I'm looking around for places as well. I did some short-term mowing for a guy in Ashburn, he's a rep for a fert & seed company based out of York, PA. He told me he can get even small orders delivered directly to the customer. Don't know about his prices, I'm going to give him a call soon.

Justin is also AWOL. He must be busy keeping his wife happy. Ahhh, young love. Tim, give Justin the heads up on how much fun it can be when the kids start popping out. Wake up four times a night every night for months on end. Not that I'm trying to stir up trouble, mind you.

Hey Adam,
I hadn't planned on it. Bobcat has opted to display its wares there, but I'm not in the market for that kind of equipment. Anyone looking for new heavy gear might find a few interesting items, although the show is geared to the building contractor.

Just thought I'd pass this along, I was at Barnes & Noble the other day, ran across a book entitled "How to Start a Business in Maryland, Virginia and the District of Columbia".
It was written by an attorney, and touches on most any question you might have regarding federal and state laws as they pertain to running a business. It doesn't go in depth on a lot of subjects, just gives you a nice overview of things.
More importantly, it lists a lot of addresses and phone numbers for various state and federal agencies that you will no doubt one day need to contact.
Overall it looked like a pretty nice reference guide. $21.95 list price.

Well, alright, the book is titled "Cynthiana" by E.T. Harrigan. This may sound awful, but I haven't read a single page of it yet. My wife grabbed the free copy when he gave it to us and I have not gotten my hands on it so far.
The plot is something like: A war set in the future, the fiance of a female soldier (Cynthiana) is killed, she vows to avenge his death.
My wife likes what she's read so far. My dad's so excited to have it published, I don't think he even cares if anyone buys a copy.

As a former writer (granted I was a newsletter writer, but even that is a tough gig to get) I can tell you that just getting published is a major achievement, so your dad's reaction is pretty understandable. Still, I hope it sells well.

Mark, now that my Dad hobnobs with the likes of Stephen King and such, his whereabouts are a closely guarded secret...
To get the book published he had to hire some sort of agent. New writers apparently don't get the time of day from publishers without some sort of representation.
Yeah, I guess I better get to it and read a few pages...

Andy, I've heard that about selling a book. My wife Ann has written a couple of children's books and the publishers are really tough to get through to without an agent. However, Ann discovered that the agents were almost as difficult to contact as the publishers. It's a regular Catch-22. You have to be nuts to want to get your book published, but they want no manuscripts that suggest the author is insane...unless your name is Stephen King.
John, we're inclined to believe you when you say Trev is the best goalie in your league, but where's the shut-out?! He let two goals through! We noticed that he's not missing very many teeth, either. Of course, you won't catch me on a rink with a bunch of malicious people holding sticks used to beat on objects (animate or inanimate), so who am I to talk smack, right?
Okay, how about a tally for the lunch on the 26th? This isn't a polling place in Iraq, folks. Just vote aye if you can make it the 26th and nay if you can't.

Both guys offer a value. Like most, consistency becomes a problem in late spring when the mulch hasn't aged as much.

I used to purchase 2-3 trailer loads weekly (80 yards each). Delivered pricing was $9 yard inn the same zip code.

Last year...I brought in 10 trailer loads..but committed to D&J 15 loads. I may start selling some mulch to some smaller companies. The only place in this area is Virginia Ground Covers and they sell for $18.00/yard. I have made some phone calls and will sell for $16. We'll see how this works this year.

Hey Mike,
My family and I moved to Clearwater (Largo, actually) in 1969, so that's the starting point. One of my brothers went to USF and one of my sisters to UF. Two other siblings have degrees, but I have to admit I'm not sure where they went. I think one of them went to UF.
I know what you mean about the cost of tix. While in Tallahassee, I never got to the games simply because I worked full time (took 12 credit hours, just barely qualifying as full time) waiting tables. The night games were out and I just never got around to buying tickets to day games. Most of all, I just worked, went to school and slept. I could never figure out how to get enough energy to do anything else.
Speaking of the cost of tickets, anyone priced tix for Redskins games of late? Dayum!
I did see Eric Johnson, Al DiMeola and Melissa Ethridge in Tallahasee, though. College towns are really great for music. On the other hand, gasoline in Tallahasee was WAY more expensive than just about anyplace else I'd lived up to the time I moved up here. Atlanta was a lot cheaper for gas, about 20 cents less a gallon. Colonial Pipeline, I assume.

When you talk to Juleen At D&J tell her marc smith from trugreen says hi. while at trugreen I used DJ, but mostly i used Grant County Mulch....But I used DJ for hauling and what not. We also used DJ to do all of our mulch blowing and I got all of my compost from them....And they stilll plow snow for TGLC as a sub....
One of the better organizatoins IMO....
I graduated from UF in 95 went to work for MIckey Mouse for a few before going out alone....Now I'm back up north...My folks live down by tampa.
I have not been back to G-vill since 97 or 98...
Marc-
I talked to Julleen this morning. First 2 trucks will be at my shop on March 3rd.
Are you still with Trugreen?
I deal with Fred Perrotta there. He takes care of 3 of my commercial accounts. I cant even buy the fert for what hes charging me.
When I worked for Clippers back in the late 80's, we used to get mulch from Grant County. It's been a long time since I've heard their name. Small world...I guess!

I left trugreen about 10 months ago. I'm the landscape manger at Georgetown Univeristy...
We always called Fred "Mr Hollywood"....He knows how to wheel and deal...almost to a fault....He'll give away the farm for his commission...I'd love to make what he's pulling down....
Grant CO and D&J the product was very similar...when I left TG we had a deal with Grant county they were hauling away all of our landscape debris....for free...although we had to invest like 70K in a loader, but in one year we were able to recognize the savings....
Grant county was able to provide the mulch in bags, along with the pine fines as well. We did not use much mulch in bags, maybe two trucks per year, the rest was bulk. if I remember correctly in the 8-10000 yard range of mulch...
It was nice though we had concrete storage bins for everything we could inventory about 800 yards at a time...and not lose any to the ground...
We still had a rollback from DJ in our yard for non organic waste and used their dumsters on all of our jobs as we needed to....They are just some really nice people to deal with...I never had met Juleen, only talked on the phone...

Man...I'm glad I have found this site. You have given me some great ideas.
I just called Juleen again and brought you up and she said "HI".
I am going to bring a rolloff in as well on the 3rd. We maintain about 300 houses in Loudoun county and bag quite a few of them. We usually wait a few weeks and try and take over to Loudoun Composting. That is really getting old and time consuming.
Thanks for your advise!

Having to handle waste more than once is time consuming....withthe dumpster your gusy can back up to it and toss the bags in and clean out the truck at the same time and they are ready to go the next day....
Th eone thing Id like to do at georgetown is have a raised concrete loading dock of sorts with the dumpster below so all you need to do is back the the equipment up to the edge and dump right in the dumpster.....We had a system like that a disney, but thats a different world as well.

Where's more snow????
I went out and did 6 estimates today and some people will try anything.
I had a Chinese lady try and wheel and deal over 2 freakin dollars per cut. I dont know about you guys but I'm so tired of dealing with people like this. I should put a quote on my proposal package...."DONT EVEN THINK ABOUT ASKING FOR A CHEAPER PRICE.....GO ELSEWHERE!" She then comments about how nice the proposal package is....We use laptops and printers in our trucks to print out proposals and on-the-spot invoices. What a joke she is.....
Sorry for ranting but my buddy that I usually call with frustrations is in the hospital with his wife having a baby
How do you guys handle these prospective clients?

when I was in florida I had an Indian(country) Doctor quibble about a price diff of $5 per month he had been a customer for 2 years and I did a $5 price hike across the board... I politely explained that my cost were not getting any cheaper and they when I go to the hospital I'm not able to negotiate the rate for doing bloodwork and thus my rates are not negotioable.... two weeks later after calling around he called me back and resigned the contract...What a PITA he would call me on friday and want me to come by on satruday to do stuff, after I had cut his lawn on thursday...

I do the same exact thing...
I told this lady today...just about as rude as i could.....but without losing my professionalism...YEA RIGHT!
"That I dont need your business that bad that I would sit here and fight over 2 bucks." She was just blown away. I guess I lost that job?
There are guys around here that just rub me the wrong way to allow someone to dictate their prices.
I started charging my clients a fuel charge last year and had one of my clients thats been with me for about 3 years refuse to pay it. I sent her a letter explaining the reasoning behind it and she still refused to pay. My next letter to her was explaining why I was taking her off the schedule. She eventually saw it my way and paid the back fuel charges.
MarcSmith
02-16-2005, 02:39 PM
I think when the fuel prices first went way up a couple years back I understood the fuel surcharge...At this time High fuel prices are going to be a way life and that its better to just up the prices a few bucks and not have the added fuel charge...Just my .02
Gas is never going to be 1.00 again. I think we will see the prices flucuate from 1.80 to 2.20 depending on your area where you happen to be when you need gas. As landscapers buying in bulk can be option, if you have the facilty and space to deal with a 500-1000 gallon tank, or buy into costo and get fuel from them or walmart or sheets....usually way cheaper..I'm stuck I have a sunoco 1 mile form my house that I pass by daily in reston...not the chepeast, but they call them convience stores for a reason right....
Dealing with customers was fun and rewarding in some cases. I had one guy who I used to cut grass for and he kicked me off of his property after I stoped cutting his grass for non payment, for three months(he was on kemo so i cut him a break) I pulled up and parked in front of his house on the proper side of the road and started cutting grass across the street(7 homes) and two right beside his. He came out yelling and screaming and telling me move my GD truck and that he woudl call his cop freinds and take care of it. Mind you I was 20 feet form his driveway behind the truck and trailer and probably 30 feet from the driveway in front of me. Some people just don't get it...If he had come and and politly asked me to move the truck I would have....not this time though buddy....

Just out of curiosity, what kind of printer do you use? I've thought about doing something like this but have wondered whether it would require some rig over the transmission hump to set it all up.

I use Quickbooks for about everything. So when a potential client calls in, we enter into the system. I go out and do the proposal. We have in our trucks laptops (I'm not sure the brand or whats in it). We use a TRIPP LITE power inverter and have the laptop and printer plugged into it. I have 3 different printers but, 1's a canon ij 600, 1's a canon i550 and my favorite is the hp 1115. That one will allow me to use my digital camera and sometimes pint a picture of their property and stick it in the proposal package. I write a "CHEESY" note on the back.. saying "this is what it looked like before we took over your lawn." I send them one about a year later.
My buddy owns a power washing company out here and he actually looks like a police car. He has his hard-wired and had the swivel laptop tray on the Trans hump and then even better had a tray for his printer put there too.
His is a nice setup....I'm just tired of going to peoples properties and having to write a bunch of info. This way I stream-line the process!
Hope that helps?

I know that this is a little off topic here but I will let everyone know about it anyways.
My mother in law converted here home from heating oil to a heat pump and has about 200 gallons of oil still in the tank. Anyone is welcome to it, all that you have to do is come out to her house and pump it out. If anyone needs it or knows of someone that could use this oil just pm me and we can get together about it. The tank is not very old so there should be nothing sitting in the bottom of the tank that should not be there.

Snow isnt really that bad, but its not fun any more. It was a real PITA whiel I was at TGLC...
I have 20 guys out right now working on campus speading CMA to keep the walks warm enough so we don't have to shovel. I'll be home by 5pm and back in again tomorrow to watch it all met.
Of course when I get home I'll get on my 1963 Wheel horse tractor and plow my drive and my neighbors, thats fun.....
On a side note. for any one who is interested. I have two Eclipse reel mowers from the late 60's. They are not bound up, the engines turn over, but won't start, I imagine a good cleaning and new fuel and plugs would make them work again....These have been kept in a garage at Georgetown and they are in good shape...I could bring them to the Lunch Meeting In warrenton if anyone is interested in them....I am not trying to sell them. these are give-aways, well might cost you a beer or two.......

The wheel horse will defintly be a keeper for me.....thats a good story.....My neighbor is a single woman who's husband died about 10 years ago. the tractor was in pieces in her garage and had been in peices since before he died....I did some landscape work for her, about 6 hours of pruning and I'd cut her grass for her on occassoin..... I would not take any money so she gave me the tractor... its got a 36" twin blade gear driven deck and a 48" plow...It definitly has a soul....It not worth more than $500 IMO, but some people think that they are worth more and restore them to showroom condition...I figure, its a tractor its meant to be used, not looked at...
I have no idea about the value on the elcipse reel's but if you had a small back yard or had some nostalgia they'd be nice...

Best Mexican in Fauquier County
When you want Mexican in Warrenton, there is no question - you want El Agave. In fact, its probably the best Mexican in Northern Virginia (and I've tried quite a few places).
Location
Agave is tucked away in the strip mall area where Routes 17 and 29 business intersect, right between Blockbuster Video and Peebles. There's always ample parking, but if you're going during the peak dinner hours, you may occasionally have to wait 10-15 minutes for a table. Lunch time is busy as well, but generally less crowded.

I could be wrong, but it seems as though everyone who's stated an intention to make today's lunch is from points north and/or east of Warrenton, assuming Tim will not attend.
Tim, any idea yet if you'll make it? If not, maybe we should find someplace in Manassas, given that most confirmed attendees are in Fairfax and one in Ashburn.

Okay, if everyone who's going to make it today is from Fairfax or Loudon, we need to meet someplace a lot closer than Warrenton. If anyone from other places intends to make it today, say so now and we'll meet at El Agave as planned.
Pardon this attitude of mine, but I just don't see the point of people living in Fairfax and Loudon driving all the way to Warrenton if nobody from down that way is going to make it.

Well, as everyone can see, the second Virginia Unofficial Lawn Care Disassociation lunch came off without a hitch.
Justin, I was tempted to do the pinching this time, but like you, I’m married and thought better of it. The young lady who waited on us last time was the victim of our second outing as well. Such is fate, but she bore up well under it.
On the subject of the staff at El Agave, I should note that our waitress was quite the eyeful, but she wasn’t the only one. If those of you didn’t make it want to know more, all I will say is this: twins. Your imagination is no doubt up to the task of filling in the blanks.
As Andy commented, we discussed a different location, but it’s just as well because Mike of BJsLawn showed up. Not sure where you drove in from, Mike, but we’re glad we caught up with you. And thanks Marc for the link to the site for garbage bags.
Marc told us about some of his experiences with the wacko college kids at Georgetown University, where he is the landscape manager. It seems that the residents of one of the dormitory buildings decided to use the dorm courtyard as their personal dumping ground, disposing of pizza boxes and a few other items I’m too disgusted to describe. These little Einsteins were brilliant enough to get into Georgetown, but not smart enough to remove the identifier information from the pizza delivery labels. Marc informed administration of the mess, giving the brats an opportunity to pick up after themselves. Marc also let in that his family members can go to G-Town for about a LOT less than other students. Anyone who wants to go to Georgetown on the cheap would do well to have Marc and his wife fill out adoption papers.
Marc went through a heckuva lot of iced tea, by the way. Not sure if he ever went to the bathroom while we were there, so he must metabolize caffeine differently from me. I’d have been in the head every five minutes if I’d had that much tea.
Mike spent the first twenty minutes at El Agave giving a percussion performance with his teeth after making the trip to El Agave on his motorcycle. Someone should buy him a sturdy leather jacket for those cool-weather rides. Still, he started with iced tea, moving along to a cup of the house java after a while. Observing Mike’s use of sugar, Marc asked Mike how he felt about having coffee with his sugar. Mike really couldn’t say much, sooo…
At some point, the discussion managed to veer into questions of grooming, probably because of a comment about on-the-job clothing, and I complained about the fact that I’ve hit a stage of life where I have to trim the little hairs in my ears. Mike asked me how old I am (guess it’s my fault, I brought it up), and when I answered, he replied that his folks are younger than I am. I expressed my gratitude by giving him a friendly one-finger salute.
Mike’s doing lawn care part-time, and his full-time job may soon require him to be on the clock at 5:30…in the morning. The idea left the rest of us cold. I can’t speak for anyone else but if you ask me, God would not have made roosters if we’re really meant to work before dawn.
Andy still hasn’t resolved the dilemma of one of his mowers leaving a strip down the middle, but seemed okay with it because his one-wheel sulky pushes the stubborn blades of grass down. He’s going to take the wayward unit to another dealer for help, but commented that one of the tires seems to wear more quickly than the other in addition to the uneven cut this unit produces. Several suggestions were offered as to the possible cause, but it seems his dealer has tried all those. We wish him the best of luck in getting it straightened out.
Andy has had some interesting feedback from a help-wanted ad he recently posted at a local church. Seems he’s getting a lot of homeless types responding, and the voice mails in connection with all this are getting interesting. Andy commented that he’s thinking seriously about hiring someone who’s command of English is less than masterful as they’re not as likely to talk his ear off…but we didn’t think he looked like Van Gogh.
All in all, we had a great time. We talked about equipment, needless to say, but Marc offered some insight as to what’s required to really understand turf management, a subject Tim has also offered insight on. Mike needs to be careful with impact equipment (ask him about that), Marc needs to watch out for operating chain saws with one hand on an unsecured lift bucket, and Andy needs to keep plenty of sunscreen handy. He’s almost as pasty as I am, and that’s pretty bad.
Next time, we’ll try to get more people involved. How many want to make it to the March lunch?

Well, I'm still mulling over my options, Homeless Guy #1, or Homeless Guy #2? Could be a dicey situation as they both have the same phone number. I can see it now, interview #1 on the phone: "Sorry man, you know, I don't think you're the right person for the job...Hey...would you might putting the other guy on the phone for me..."
If the shelter doesn't pan out, I'm thinking of starting an "Apprentice" style contest to find just the right employee. In my version however, the weekly task will ALWAYS be the same...go out, cut grass, whoever makes the least amount of money that day will be fired.
Last night I wrote up a quick want ad to post at NOVA in Sterling, I'd be happy with someone that wants 20 or so hours per week. Unless I can find a full-timer.

Last night I wrote up a quick want ad to post at NOVA in Sterling, I'd be happy with someone that wants 20 or so hours per week. Unless I can find a full-timer.
This is the funniest post I've seen around here in a long time. That phone call would be straight out of Seinfeld, only he would actually do it.
On the other hand, you do have the option of making two separate phone calls and pretending to be someone else. "Hi, I may SOUND like the guy who just called, but trust me, I'm not."
I love the Apprentice methodology, but you gotta remember that this game is already in play: Anyone in business who doesnt make enough money gets fired by the marketplace.
On the serious side: Andy, I'm thinking about advertising at a church with a large Latino congregation when the time comes. Any such churches up your way?
HOOLIE
02-27-2005, 05:49 PM
Yeah, I was thinking about contacting churches as well. That's really what I thought I was doing when I called Reston Interfaith. I need to call them back and clarify my intentions. I was hoping they would know of someone looking for work. I could possibly find someone good at the shelter, but most likely they won't have transportation, and I hate getting into that pick-up/drop-off arrangement.
You got St. Joseph's Catholic in Herndon, a huge congregation. Many Hispanics are Catholic. That would probably be a good place to ask around when the time comes. I might call them myself tomorrow.
I just read we could get 6-10 inches tomorrow. I already have a few mulch jobs lined up, I was planning to get started on them this week. Maybe not...

I would be interested in talking to any of you that might be looking to sub out chemical work or might want to network for some referrals. I employ 6 full time licensed applicators and have been in this business over 15 years. We can handle anything from one 5k lawn to 200 acres.

It's kinda disapointing thatwe dont have anything on the ground or even falling from the sky yet here in Manassas. I guess that is just my luck though for the first year having a plow mounted on the truck. But you know darn well if I were to sell it this summer that we would get nailed with 10 plowable events next year. Oh well I'll just hang on for next season and I'm glad that I did not plan on plowing paying any bills this first season for me but it would be nice just to pay off the plow for this season from plowing.

Yeah, the weather forecasting thing is might dicey. I once read something that kindasorta explained the difficulty involved.
There are two problems in the weather forecasting business right now. One is that computer models are not very good at replicating the real McCoy. How much of this is due to inadequate software and how much is due to insufficient data sets to construct a good model, I don't know...which leads us to problem numero dos.
One article I read several years ago (can't recall the author or title) took the position that if you really want a full data set for climate, you'd have to have sensors positioned at every one foot...at one-foot intervals all the way up to the end of the atmosphere. Very impractical, to say the least, but his point was that small-scale thermal variations have a huge impact on weather and that without a good working understanding of those small-scale variables, you just don't have a prayer of generating a solid data set, which in turn helps to develop a good predictive model for computer software.
The meteorologist's Catch-22?
Justin, I feel for you on the recovery of investments on snowplows and the like. Snowfall in this part of the mid-Atlantic is a bit inconsistent. If I lived in Philly, I'd be a bit more inclined to go for it, but around here, I'm more inclined to focus on power fertilizer spreaders and so on that I'm sure will generate revenues. On the other hand, Wayne obviously has work to do. But you see what I mean? This storm tracks three degrees to the west and we get nothing but rain.
By the way, Cemars, your offer of subbing out chem services is a good one. I hope you're marketing that in a big way to little-guy LCOs like me. And we who aren't that familiar with such services could use some guidance on pricing. Incidentally, what's your name?

Sorry to hear it Justin. Just out of curiosity, how wide a net do you use to pick up snow-removal work? Too bad you can't rely on some traffic from areas that now are getting hammered, but you're right about the temps. When the forecast said something about 34 degrees, I figured the roads would be no trouble at all.
If it's any help, my wife is really peeved that school is closed because she wants to get some work going, but maybe she's just tired of looking at me.

Yeah nnot has good Hourly $$ like doing Driveways, but sometimes you get called up and paid to sit on a job like on a day like today...
In Ashburn, we were always looking for good plow drivers to hire as a subcontractor i think the rate when I left was 75 an hour.... for a truck and plow...there were several occassion when I called a sub up and they sat on a job for 3-4 hours while nothing happened....We paid generaly in about 5-10 days....provided we had an invoice the day after the snow event....And the sub was on a guaranteed call list....

The nice thing is that you are generally working on a nicer than average office building or HOA the asphalt is in good shape and the curbs are usually marked...When I was at TGLC we tried to keep a sum at one building and not have them running around from job to job....made it easier keeping track of billable time.....Plus les chance of confusion....the Sub would report directly to a manager or a site supervisor, so it eliminated a lot of guess work....

Hey Mark maybe this will change your mind.
The plow that I bought was a new Boss Plow 9' in length for $3783.00 and then also bought a set of Pro Wings to extend another 10" on each side for $185.00.
It is a BIG investment when you are not guaranteed any plow able snow will fall in the winter, but if you have one or two nice storms and the rite accounts and hourly rate you can start to recoup that money very quickly but there is a reason that most people will tell you don't expect to pay off your plow in the first season.
Here is a pic from back in January on a commercial prop that I plow.

Manassas area mostly unless I go into Clifton and hit my parents road in and driveway once in a while.
I am strongly thinking about hooking up with a bigger company next year as a sub if they can assure me that they can keep me busy in some decent sized parking lots or some subdivisions. I dont know if I could work for $75 or $80 per hour with someone else seeing as my plow is 9' wide and with the Pro Wings on its close to 11', also that thing really moves alot of snow with the wings on so it is that much more productive then. Who knows though they might not look at it my way and only want me running the plow with out the wings on.

I was at that same lot in the front of the building on monday night pushing and the lot is probably about 300' across so I would get on the gas a little to much at times when backing up. After being there for about 20 minutes this guy from a house across the street comes out in his driveway at about 12:30AM yelling, I barely heard him over the diesel and the windows were barely cracked. I put the LF window down and he yells what the hell to you think you are doing? I replied by saying "My Job" well he did not like that response at all and started MFing me and saying some people are trying to sleep and have to work in the morning then started saying that the blade was to load when I dropped it.
I told him it is a 900# plow and what the hell do you want me to do about it, the blade is metal not rubber. He started throwing out the F bomb some more and I'm trying to be professional and not cuss back at him but he started to get under my skin a little and I was very close to getting out of the truck and telling him to call the cops that the station is only a half mile down the road if he really doesn't like the noise.
He finally got done and went into his house so I was there about another ten minutes then when I was pulling out onto the street to leave I saw his window blind in his bedroom pulled back a little bit. Well down goes my drivers window and out comes my hand just a waving at him like he is my best buddy. I'm sure that torqued him even more when he saw me just waving.
What the hell does this guy do when the city plow comes down his busy road two or three times on each side plowing or when the trash men come at 5:30AM when he is trying to sleep. Does he go out and yell at them? Who knows and who cares I just laughed at him at the end.

Marc yes it can be a little tricky driving with on narrow two lane roads. I try to just slow down or let the person coming towards me pass while I stop.
I looks weird to me seeing 7'6" plow on F250 and F350 now when I pass them since I'm used to seeing mine all of the time. I probably would not even change my driving habits if I ran around with a 7'6" blade on a truck now. LOL

Still looking for a helper. Homeless Guy #2 might be ok, talked to him last week, thinking of hiring him for a day for a trial run. Unfortunately the majority of people in these shelters have either mental or drug problems, or both.

But Justin, you really need to make it next month. As I mentioned earlier...twins.
Looks like more precipitation this week, although the Weather Channel is a bit iffy as to whether it'll hit the ground as a solid or a liquid. I was planning on hitting the bricks to put out flyers this week (and next), but if I have to do the mailers now and the flyers later, it should come out about the same in terms of response...I hope.

Mark- I got a 10' x 20' for $210 a month. Must be some price fixing going on, every place I looked at had the same exact prices for each size unit. The trailer I'm getting is just a little 8 footer, so 20' is enough.
I tell you, 3 years ago when I started, I was checking into storage units, and you could get a 10' by 30' for around $170. They just keep building these places like crazy, and the prices are going thru the roof. One place I looked at had an entire building (maybe 50-60 units) that were empty.
I wanted a 30' unit, but they are around $300. At least there's no contract, just month-to-month. No power outlet, I'll have to keep the blade grinder at home.
Mark McC
03-07-2005, 07:40 AM
$300 and no electricity? That sounds a little steep. Of course, they do make power invertors that will make 120-volt juice from the alternator in a truck, soo....
The price thing is more price leadership...no formal agreement, but everyone's prices are advertised, so it's easy to avoid charging too little. No scrubs in the storage business!
If I didn't have a garage, I'd probably try to find a homeowner who wants to rent their garage for $150 a month or something like that, or use the garage in swap for mowing.

I'll have to ask about swapping services. I don't know that the place has much grass though. As far as the lack of electricity, it seems like the newer facilities are the culprits. One manager told me that's how they keep the prices down (huh?), by not having tenants running up the power bill. I guess it also discourages the downtrodden from using the place as their "home".

Since the weather's the big topic today, you might get a chuckle out of this story-
If you remember back 2 years ago, how it rained constantly, the lawns were practically underwater (I still have flashbacks). Anyway, a buddy of mine had some new neighbors move in next door, they came from somewhere on the West Coast. Husband happened to be named BOB RYAN... So as weekend plans got rained out each week, all the people on the street would comment to the new guy "Hey, thanks a lot, BOB..." or "When you gonna do something about the weather...BOB" stuff like that.
Apparently Bob never watched Channel 4, when he finally found out there was a weatherman with the same name he was relieved, he had thought everyone in Virginia was an a-hole.
