21 hp kaw, no warrenty left, low hours, runs good, no unusual noise, always maintained oil, no occurances ever and all of a sudden one cylinder is smoking fairly bad. Any ideas before I rip into her

How many hours? What color smoke?

travis is right about the smoke color being important.
black is fuel, grey/blue is oil.
could be alot of things.
valve stem seals,oil control rings

About 150 hours and blue/grey smoke (not good)

Have you checked the compression? If it's bad it's possibly a ring issue. If you have good compression it's probably a valve seal. You can change a valve seal without taking the head off by charging the cylinder with air (get the fitting at autozone) & then using a small valve spring compresser to gain access to the seal. Probably take about 30 minutes.
Check the compression -- it will steer you in the right direction

It could only be a problem with the rings or valves. It is probibly a valve seal like said above and it is a good idea to check compression. If its low it could still be caused by valves or rings or both.

could it be a reed valve gone bad?? check engine for air seepage around air filter or carb. what's the spark plug look like?? GOt a pic??

Vacuum leak doesn't cause smoke. Just poor idle. Weak valve spring would cause high rpm problems (miss) due to valve float. Due to the fact that only 1 cylinder is smoking it's probably going to be the valve seal. Check the compression anyway.
