I have three of these hedge trimmers and really like them. I've been told that the newer ones have an EPA upgraded engine that doesn't have the power the old ones do. Any comments on that?

Hi,
Thanks for the question. I have seen this topic on the board before.

1. Tanaka engine designs ARE NOT new.
There has not been a newly designed engine since 1998 when Tanaka was the first two-stroke manufacturer to meet the California Air Resources Board's (C.A.R.B.) Tier II emissions standards with its PureFire two-stroke engine.

2. THT vs. HTD-xxxxPF
Any hedge trimmer with the THT prefix features a standard Tanaka two-stroke engine. Any HTD-xxxxPF features a 24cc, 1.3 h.p. Tanaka PureFire two-stroke engine. The HTD hedge trimmers are primarily sold in California and have the same excellent power-to-weight as THT hedge trimmers.

Hope this helps. Let me know if you have any other questions.

So what you are saying is that I don't have to buy a Pure-Fire engine on a Tanaka product unless I live in California. That's good news because I'm now on the lookout for a good used 340 trimmer.

That is correct.
