Can you explain this bucket? I'm buying a new Cat and maybe I should be looking at this bucket combo

We have a 60" 4 in 1 combo bucket on our Cat 216 and I couldn't live without it. There's so much you can do with it and it will save you time picking up very small piles of debris or that ever so valuable topsoil when the pile dwindles. Using it do doze doesn't work very well, you never really know what the back of the bucket is angled at so sometimes it gouges the ground. It is faster to dump with the combo bucket because you don't have to cycle the bucket cylinders all the way out, instead just drop the bottom of the bucket out in about 1/3 the time.

It's basically a clamp bucket... it's cut about half-way down the bottom and is hinged at the top above the cut, with two cylinders controlling the opening action. As scag mentioned, it's great for pushing (as a blade), backdragging, clamping, grabbing... just about anything you would do with a claw.

Bobcat calls their 4-in-1 bucket a Combination Bucket.

I've been sceptical on purchasing one, but have heard great comments about them here and on other sites. My friend has one for his Cat 416 backhoe/loader and says it is great for backfilling trenches. He says visibility of the fill material is a lot better than dumping forward out of a standard bucket.

The downside is that they have a little smaller capacity since they are made out of heavier materials. The heavier bucket means less load lifting capacity, but with the smaller volume it should perform as well as your standard bucket.

they are a fantastic tool

another advantage is if you run into dumping problems due to height. you just flip up the front.

also you can backdrag the opened front to pile up debris
the grabbing is one of the best issues.

ours was well worth the money.
