i am in the process of getting a bigger truck. i have been comparing the 2 and have found that i can get an 2001 diesel for about 2-3k more than an 2003 6.0. I have figured in the cost of ownership for the 2 vehicles: lower pmt, more $$$ on gas with the 6.0 vs higher pmt, better mileage with the 6.6. It comes out to be about $40.00 higher for the diesel per month.

Here is my question: The diesel I am looking at is a 1 owner very nice maintained extended cab, black with 125,000 for $22,000 +++. Hopefully I can get it for 22 out the door. or a 2003 extended cab 6.0 with around 40-50K on it for around 19000 +++ roughly.

I know most would say go for the diesel, but is 125k alot of miles?
I know absolutely nothing about diesel repair, so are they a nightmare to repair if anything goes wrong?

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

man, I wouldn't feel right buying a truck for that much money and that amount of miles. I don't care if it has a diesel or not.

I would say for your needs go with the 6.0. It has 75k fewer miles on it. The diesel would get better mileage and last longer, but it takes a long time to make up for the gas savings. It's not just the engine that wears on a vehicle, the whole truck wears down. Granted 125k isn't that many miles, but you will be replacing parts on that truck long before the gasser. If the trucks had the same number of miles and the same year, that might be a different story. Sit down and figure the amount you would save in gas a year and how long it would take to make up the 3k difference, then figure in the extra maintenance due to the higher mileage and see if the extra life of the diesel would be worth it. I think you'll find it won't be. Take the money you would have paid per month extra for the diesel and put it into advertising and you will get a much better return on your dollar.

Third vote for Gas.

Engine is one thing, the rest of the truck is another... 125k miles is a very USED truck.

I have the 2002 HD with the 6.0 and love it.

Forgot to mention this in my post above. In May 2002 I bought a 2001 2500HD 6.0 ext cab with 35k miles for $17k. It has been a great truck.

I have a 2500 HD regular cab 6.0.Ihave never seen the wisdom in the diesel upgrade. It is a 7900 upgrade. Do you realize the amount of miles and gallons of fuel you would have to put on to justify that? Unless you are pulling a heavy trailer a considerable distance daily forget the diesel. Remember you are in business to make money, not to just own expensive toys :)

If you pull anything over 10,000 lbs a lot I would go with the Duramax. I love mine and I get about 15 mpg when towing my lawn trailer (16' about 6000lbs). It also pulls my bobcat great (11000lbs with trailer). It will pull both of these trailer up hill in top gear (allison trans) and maintain speed. I did pull a small log skidder with it once and I would estimate that at about 21000lbs, although I don't think I'll try that again for safety reasons. It's a great truck but I will warn you that they have injector problems. I got a letter in the mail saying that they will warranty injectors till 200000 miles. Mine has 50000 miles on it now with no problems.

BTW-I had a 2500 with a 6.0 gas motor before my current truck and it did fine but didn't pull near as good as the duramax.

THanks for the input! I ran some numbers comparing cost of diesel per gallon vs gas. I think I will end up getting the 6.0. 125k is definately alot of miles for the truck, I didnt think of it that way. The engine prob has alot of life left, but the suspension and wheel bearings and driveshaft all that junk has beeen under alot of stress, especially if the previous owner hauled alot.

For what I tow. 16" open trailer, 48 exmark ztr, 36, exmark metro and all accessories that is plenty of truck. Occasionally, I haul 2 pallets of mulch, but no bobcats or anything like that. Even upgrading to an eclosed trailer in the future, I still should be way under 10k lbs.

Thanks for the input, now I am off to find a 01 or 02 Grey Crew Cab 4x4 2500 HD with a 6.0....Oh yeah and with the $4k that I save, I can put that towards a 3" lift and maybe some 33's, and of course some more advertising....

You might want to consider what transmission the diesel has. Is it an Allison? I just had the transmissoin rebuilt (4l80) in my 2500HD with 60k. Not very happy about it. And it's still not right. I only pull the mowers once or twice a week. The Allison is the best. It may be worth a little more even if you can find one in a 2500 gasser. The 8.1 in a 2500 comes with an Allison.

Well I found the truck: A 2002 Chevrolet LT Crew Cab 1500HD 4x4 w/ 39k miles on it. It has a 3-4" lift with some 33's already on it. It is silver and awesome.
I went with the 1500hd b/c I simply could not find an 02 crew cab 2500, then I read somewhere on an RV forum that in 02 there was no 2500 Crewcabs, they were only avail with reg or ext cab and instead Chevrolet released the 1500hd crew cab, which from my understanding is a 2500 badged as a 1500. Who cares, I believe it tows 10300 and the 2500 tows 10800....Awesome truck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
