Contracts?

I have been mowing and doing landscaping for about 5 years now, and in the past have never required any customers to sign contracts. I have never run into a problem with a customer based on frequency of mowing or quality of work. This year I have read alot of posts about people who have questions about what to include on their contracts, but my question is what is the big benifit of contracts? Some of my "senior" customers that consider me a friend as well as a worker may be scared off by having to sign a contract. Thanks for the input.
