I would like to know what you guys charge for an average lawn. I charge $18 for a normal size lot to $25 for a corner lot. I was told by some other lawn care business that I was not charging enough but I do not know if they just don’t want me to get more biz or if they are sincerely trying to help me out. Any information would be of great assistance!!

Charge more! That's cheap. Good Luck.
I worked for a large lawn company in Ann Arbor in college and I would say thier average price was around 25 or so for a regular size yard. Some were more some were less.

I don't know what you guys call a "normal" sized lawn, but most subdivision lots around my area are about 1/2 acre. These lots usually go for around 30-35 dollars but some of them will be increasing this year. If it's a real small lot, we still have a 30 dollar minimum for the stop. These prices are of course only for the small sub lots.

We have a minimum of 35.00. You have to take into consideration a lot of factors such as location( distance from your home base) fuel costs, labor, equipment needs, and I can go on and on. Each company has a differant criteria to set their profit margins. Set a rate for square ft. get a measuring stick and measure each lot. After awhile you will get the feel for each type of situation. Good luck

I bid everything by the hr. over the years ive become good at looking at a lawn & determining how long it will take, trees, landscapes, shape, size, irrigation, will i have to double cut, ect. all determine time. i do a private runnway (2 acers) as fast as i can do some residentials (10-20000 sqft) with endless trees and turns. every time you turn your not mowing. I figure about $50.00/hr thats one person and a lazer 60" For$18.00 i could send one person for 21 minutes to complete (thats from putting the truck in park till i put it in drive) or two people for 10 min. at $25.00 that would be 1-30 min. or 2-15 min. If i could do the job in that time then it wouldn't be too cheap.

I'm in Westland and I charge $20 to $25 for small lawns and I have a minimum of $30 for corner lots. If I can get more I do.If you quote high first, judge their reaction and then try to meet in the middle and make sure you are still coming out with the price you want. Hope this helps!

Matt,
I live and work in west bloomfield. My advice to you is to not listen to anyone in your area and ask people at least 12 miles away from where you work or ask someone you really trust. What i have found is people in your area will misslead you and are not benficial to your needs. I help people all the time but most people will not help you and some will flat out lie to you to see if you are sleeping.
They pretend to be a friend but they are usually not on your side. My motto is help others and help will come to you. My advice is price the lawn for whatever you think the customer will go for and get the lawn even if you under bid it then raise it as much as you can or until you have enough lawns. Dont listen to others complaining about your low prices they just dont want competition. Many people get into the business this way, its part of doing business , unfortunatly. Dont listen to what others say just keep getting your accounts until you have enough then raise your prices when you are comfortable. This way the clients will tell you when you are too high and that is the best way to know if you are charging too low. Let the customer tell you that you are too high not your competition.

Matt,
18 does sound kind of low for canton but some of those lawns are small and i cant say for sure. If you can tell me how bug they are maybe i can give you a better idea. I used to work in canton in construction so i have a good idea of the location if you want to tell.

He's right, you should sell it according to your own needs and becareful of "the guy across the street" because if they are watching that closely they probably want the account!!

Thanks for all of the information Some of the lawns are pretty small i do not know the sq footedge of them but i will most likly raise my prices this season. As for the sales tax i do not charge I might start if I grow some more and it is requiered. If you can tell me if it is law to charge for services i would like to know that Thanks.
I would charge more. You didn't state how many square feet the lawn had but we have a minimun that we charge. We never charge less than $25. It just isn't worth it unless you have 5 or 6 at one stop. Our average lawn is about $45 here. We are to the point that we pick and choose who we want. Most of our add on lawns are customer referrals.

We are probably going to get read of the ones that we can not get our 52" in to the back yard if we can pick up a few more lawns this season. We will contenue to do trailer parks thoug we have one in which we do at leas 30 homes at $10 per trailer and it only takes a bout 5min to do one that is edge trim and blow of the sidewalks. We are trying to go for the upper class homes to bring in some more high class customers. They will also help with flyers and brochers in that we can use a pic of their house. If you know what i mean.

Don't worry about sales tax in Michigan. Your service is all labor - and labor in Michigan is non-taxable.

Hey, I was wondering would any of you folks up here in wolverine country have any trailers for sale? Looking for an open trailer (preferably tandem axle).

Eric, there is a guy right near me that gets these trailers by the trailer load. He has pheNOMinal deals. My brother just bought a 20 ft.x6ft. with a nice liftgate with brakes and a wrapped tongue for I think $1400. A 16 footer like this goes for about $900. out the drive. He has any size you want. Dovetail or straight.

If you're down in Toledo, Ohio, I doubt that you are going to save enough on a 6x12 to justify driving all the way up here. I can get it for you though.

I have a guy around me (Jenison Mi) that sells probably the same type trailors They have used tires and not the greatest paint jobs but are very cheap. They are constructed very well. I bought a 6.5 x 16 ft 5000lbs with brakes for 950.00. They are manufactured by JJN Enterprises. I dont have a closeup of mine but heres a pic. The sides are not included. I added them after.

If you want a good trailer in the Toledo area go to Bedford Machinery 9899 Telegraph Rd. Erie Mi. 734-848-4980 it's just a few miles from North Town Mall. He builds great trailers any way you want them and at a great price. Its nice to have someone to go to if you ever have a problem. Last year I hit a post and bent the axel and he had me fixed the same day. Im sure he already has a 6x12 built and at twice the quality that you will get from Tractor Supply.
