I must be getting dame bramage because I cant come up with what im looking for. Ive done searches already, and it seems theirs a ton of mulch calculators available on the net which is great. Does anyone have a good formula for field use. Just something to give me a close estimate of how much mulch is needed for a 2" and or 3" bed 'x' feet by 'y' feet. Or perhaps a formula for 2" times total sq footage. Just something to use while out giving an estimate.

Go to sears, they have a construction calculator that will help with many projects and it cost about 20 bucks. Even if you can do the math quickly its always nice to double check yourself.

to calculate mulch for 3" bed installs,

total square feet x .25 divided by 27 = yards of mulch

for example: 500sqft x .25 = 125 / 27 =4.6 yards (5 yards)

If you are buying it in bulk, then just buy 5 yards

If you are buying it in 2 cuft bags, then multiply the # yards you need by 13.5 (14 to round up) (13.5 2cuft bags = 1 yard)
for example, 14 x 5 = 70 bags.

If you are buying it in 3 cuft bags, then multiply the # yards you need by 9 (9 3 cuft bags = 1 yard)
for example, 9 x 5 = 45 bags.

1 yard covers approx 108 sqft at 3"

Hope this helps.

got it.

Excel geeks, whats the chances of making a quick ref chart with. Say with the depth at the top, and the sq footage down the sides, follow it over until they meet to see the total yards needed. Sq footage incraments every 5 (since we round up when it comes to buying this should be a decent margin of error).

Im gonna try to make something but Im no excel wiz. If I get it done Ill post it up if someone doesnt already have one.
