Placing flyes ON a mailbox is illegal, as in sliding them under the flag? I just found out one of my guys distributed about 800 like this, instead of placing them on the doors. I wanted them on the doors in the first place, knowing that mailboxes may be a legal issue. A lady has already called me, claiming its a federal offense, and shes got the license plate number, and she's reporting me, and blah blah blah. Somebody please clear this up ASAP, because if I have to go back and remove these suckers its gonna be a long day.

YES it is a Federal Offesne for anything to touch any part of the mailbox (or even the mailbox post) without postage. IF the PO would decide to fine you in is like $300 per piece per mailbox.

$300x800=$240,000 bucks. Looks like my a** is goin out to remove these.

Yeah and even if they don't or didn't fine you and just chewed your butt out, they'd still put your info in their "little black book" in case of any future violations so it is best to get them off before you have to even deal with the PO.

I called the lady back to clarify the situation, she was kinda nasty and friendly at the same time... but I sent this stupid guy out to get them. I can tell we're off to a good start this year...

If you instructed your helper properly, it should be HIM that goes around and removes them IMO.

Who owns the mailbox? You or the Government?

The Government once it is installed for all legal purposes.

Doesn't matter they want to sell stamps.

I wouldn't send the same person out to get them. It will be easy for said person to say 700 must of already took them out the mail box...... You need to go out and get them.

I asked the question to be an ass really. I'd have to check up here but flyers and non postage paid mail is a common occurence.

A buddy of mine just did the same thing two weeks ago........he put them on the flags of the box...........Post Office called him and told him it was a no-no.
But he could put them on the posts. That is in Brandon, MS.
Anyway, the mail carrier picked them up, they said if he wanted them back
he could come get them. They were very nice this time(its a southern thing).
But i bet next time it wont be so friendly of a phone call.

OH, by the way to our Northern friends,
Its about 75, sunny and the ice cream truck just came through our
neighborhood.

Hey I'll be down in Greenville in May, how close is this to Jackson? I want to go visit the Moak Cabin in the old State building.

If they are already in the mailbox then I wouldn't be going around opening the box and digging them out.

I would run to that area and drive around until I found the mail carrier. I would plead ignorance of employee and ask him what can be done. He will probably tell you that he won't turn you in and if a homeowner does then at least you made a effort and the post master will understand.

As for the post office wanting to sell stamps. I believe it is illegal to put mail in boxes with a stamp also. It has to be processed and delivered by the post office. The law is to keep theft of property (rent money etc.) from happening.

I once placed some fliers in the mail boxes. This one neighborhood had all the same mail boxes with slots in the front.. so I did not have to open them. I guess they're not as strict around here. The post master told me that I could place them on the mailboxes.. not in them. He told me.. the next time it happens that I would have to pay the postage on the amount they found.. no other fine was mentioned.

This may or may not have been asked...

Since mailboxes are COMPLETELY off limits, what if you take a ziplock bag or clear bag of some kind place your flyer along with a stone inside and leave it by the foot of the driveway? I've seen this done by lawn fertilizer companies such as a chemlawn, or lawndoctor in my area. Their's is a bit more professional than just a bag and a rock.

But if you make it look professional, place the flyer in the bag so it does not look like some lunatic driving around throwing rocks at peoples house, could this be an effective, and most importantly LEGAL way of advertising flyers? Assuming they don't blow around and have you be fined for litter..

Hi Mack77,

You could do that, you could also print up doorhangers on some thicker paper?
