View Full Version : Enlightenment needed- Pine Straw

I have an estimate to do: putting pine straw in beds. Being this is my first year in the south I've never even seen the stuff up close until today (always used bark mulch up north). I found a supplier at $5.95 per bale. But how many bales do you need /100sq. ft.? There's a thin layer down on the guy's beds now, so I assume I just add the new stuff on top. But is there a formula like there is with mulch? :help:

The average pinestraw bale will cover between 50-60 square feet. I use an average of 55, so divide your total bed square footage by 55 and you should be close. As for your price, that seems high to me. Here in Knoxville, we get bales wholesale for $4, but I can get them for $3.95 per bale at Lowe's and Home Depot. If I have a lot to put out, I get them dropped shipped from someone in Alabama or Georgia.

that seems awfully high for a bale of pine needles,i can buy 2.5 bales in a round bundle for 6.50,3.45 a bale at home depot or lowes.as for spreading the needles, yes just spread them over the old needles, around the edges of the bed you want to grab a handful and turn them under to give them a rounded look. :blob3: :blob3:

Ok, thanks for the insight guys! I'll look for cheaper stuff. Now I wonder why people want pine needles in their beds? Up north people paid us to rake them up, lol. :dizzy:

After I read the start of this thread this morning I googled 'pine straw' (Is it one word or two?) as I don't think I've ever seen the stuff. Anyways I hit the website of a pinestraw dealer and it says they have a vendor in Syracuse. I e-d 'em a message wondering who the vendor is. I'm going to go look at the stuff. Might even get some to mulch with.

Yeah we get long needle for $3.33 and slash for $2.83 and charge $7 for install and actual cost.....
I like to use it because unlike bark, it does not "float" away when it rains, although it decomposes a little quicker....
