Been looking at a used GMC 2500 4x4 with a 6.5 Diesel but have been told to stay away... the 6.5's are prone to problems
Can you guys share any thoughts

And how it's been maintained. I drive an 82' 1/2 ton with the 6.2 diesel ( the first and supposedly the worst year  ) It is still rolling 23 years later with @ 200,000 miles on the origional engine.. only thing it has ever had done is: water pump and fuel injectors last year, and it had a factory replaced Injector pump done back in about 84'... BTW 93' was the best year for the 6.5.. in 94 ( do avoid this particular year ) they went to an elctronic Inj. pump, and it took a while to dial them in..
They aren't the most powerful diesel, ( or admitedly the longest lived ) but if it was taken care of, it'll work..

It is a 98 with 170k Miles ... I heard they will drop rods without warning.
Thanks for the input

I own a 93 3500 with the 6.5 diesel. My friend who I bought it from had to replace the original motor at 140,000 miles wich is pretty pitiful for a diesel engine. The engine was replaced in 2000....I guess that means the engine I have now is one of the ones prone to problems huh? :dizzy:
So far the truck has served me well...although I have since read so many horror storied reguarding the chevy diesel that I really do regret buying that truck.

And by the way.... the last owner babied the hell out of this truck and still had to spend almost 7,000 for a new motor.

I had a 1995,Chevy 6.5 turbo diesel 3500HD. It was run hard as a wrecker, and when I bought it in 2001, it had 189,000 hard miles on it. However, it had received excellent maint. from the owner, who was a mechanic. He had put several fuel pumps on it, but GM finally got that problem worked out. I used the truck for 3 years, and sold it to a friend of mine. He still uses it daily for his tree trimming business.
I think they are fairly good engines, but require a pretty high level of maint. to prevent problems. And, problems are usually expensive to fix on that engine. My preference is for the Cummins and Powerstroke diesels, but the price was right on that truck.

The 6.5s are a turd of a engine I know of a 3500HD tow truck aswell its seen 2 engines and many injection pumps which are expensive. The truck has seen more engine work then anything else you just look at it the wrong way and the engine craps out. I wouldn't even consider a Chev diesel P/U especially pre Tampax oops Duramax
Chev trucks with gas pots are fine but they never could build a diesel light truck it all started with the 350 olds diesel.
