Well i would really only do it to neighbors of clients that you already service if you see something they may need done and they already kind of know who you are from seeing you work near by maybe.
The referrals are the best. Sometimes if you offer incentives to current customers say give em a free cut if they refer a friend to mowing their lawn for the season or 10% off a job. Makes em feel like they are getting something out of it. But if they already like you and your work alot then you rarely have to ask them that, they will just tell anyone they know when something comes up that involves landscaping.
Customers rarely hire a complete stranger, often they get the contractor they use from seeing them service someone they know or getting reccomended to them.
