The magnets are glued on to the flywheel. All engine manufacturers attach the magnets this way. Some things that can cause them to come loose would be high heat temperatures, high humidity conditions which allowed moisture to get between the magnet and flywheel and allowed rust to form. The rust can actually push the magnet off of the flywheel. Just one magnet coming loose can cause the catastrophic failure that you saw.
