The 6.2 diesel v8 was introduced in 1982, and was a complete new design. It has nothing to do with the 350 diesels. In 1982 the 6.2 (painted orange) had bigger valves than the later years. The reason that they changed to a smaller valve was that they ran into problems with the heads cracking. In the late 80s they changed a few things and went to a electronic throttle position. You shouldnt have a problem with the military trucks, but most others had an egr valve right in the middle of the intake. I always get a heavy gvw intake to replace it with b/c they flow much better and do not dump all the soot back down the intake.
